Search engine redirect-very nasty!

    I have been infected with a virus while trying to watch a video clip from a legitimate website. At first I had the “Malware Catcher 2009” problem, which I removed with Malware Bytes, but I have been left with a search engine redirect virus which behaves as I describe below.

    The font in the google search is larger than normal.

    Most search engines seem to be affected. Bing does not seem to be affected, but I may be wrong.

    Not every link on the search is a redirect. It might be one or two per page, but it seems the more I click on the search results, the more prevalent it will become.

    The status bar should read “www.justsearching.co.uk/JustBlog/301-redirect-removal.html “ but the status bar does not match URL on search engine when I hover over it but reads:

    http://search.live.com/go/3/ random number/random letters and numbers.” for livesearch.com or for google it might be:

    http://www.google.com/go/1/72145/S8...LuE04DQ1N0g2Lc7PN083tTAuSCowSS_KzyktLisyBwA~”

    Then for a short time the browser address bar reads:

    http://bysearch.net/searchn.php?s=1...NLuE05DQ1N0g2Lc7PN083tTAuSCowSS_KzyktLisyBwA~

    and a page comes up for less than a second which says: “The document has moved here. Wait...”

    If I press esc and stop the process at that point and then press the “here” link, I will return to the original search engine page, even if I had opened up the page in another window. If not, then I will be redirected to a random website, sometimes porn or a virus cure.

    Some anti-malware will not update and others (AVG, ad aware) will not load, none show any virus. I have tried everything I can think of and have looked around the forums for a solution without success. I need your help with this. I hope you will be able to help and I thank you in advance. I’ve attached the logs.

    I am not seeing anything in your logs to explain this. However, I don't know what this is so unless you do, delete it:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\64FE6EC

    Then remove everything you can in this folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\

    Next run CCleaner.

    Then run ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

    NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
    o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

    Make sure all of your browser temp files are removed.

    Then do this:
    Using BitDefender Online Scan.

    Done, no viruses detected, but the redirect is still there.

    It didn't behave in the way as described in the directions, but simply ran and produced a log, which is attached.

    Thank you for your help, I hope we can get on top of this.

    That did not find anything. Please do the following:

    First make sure you have emptied your internet temp files and your cache files.

    Using BitDefender Online Scan.

    I was unable to update BitDefender and received a message box which read:

    Udate Failed. Continue?

    BitDefender failed to update the virus definitions,
    Although it might be possible to check for viruses, the result will probably ot be 100% accurate.

    Do you want to start scanning?

    I continued with the scan but it found nothing.

    I've attached it.

    Download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.

    • Doubleclick the cureit-beta.exe file and allow to run
    • If it prompts you about getting any updates, get the update and then rerun the cureit-beta.exe installation.
    • When it finishes you will have a green window with a Start and and Update selection. Click Start
    • the Express Scan of your PC window will come up. Click OK to scan main memory to detect infected process in memory.
    • If anything is found in memory, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    • You may see a popup window to Buy or get a discount on the program. Just click the X at the top right to close this popup. The scan will continue.
    • Once the short scan is completed, click the Custom Scan radio button. Then Select each of your hard disk drives (that is if you have more than one). A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    • Click the green arrow at the right under the Dr.Web logo, and the scan will start.
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it finds any problems and asks if you want to cure or move the file.
    • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
      [IMG]
    • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
      [IMG]
    • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    • Reboot your computer!! This is necessary because there could be files in use that will be moved or deleted during reboot.
    • After reboot, rename the DrWeb.csv file to DrWeb.txt so that it can be uploaded here and then attach the log from Dr.Web to your next reply

    Tried to run Dr. web cureit. I tried to update it but got an error message:

    Data Execution Prevention-Microsoft Windows

    To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program

    Name: Internet Explorer
    Publisher: Microsoft Corporation

    I click OK and I get an error message:
    Internet Explorerhas encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    The error signature is:

    EventType : BEX P1 : iexplore.exe P2 : 8.0.6001.18702 P3 : 49b3ad2e
    P4 : unknown P5 : 0.0.0.0 P6 : 00000000 P7 : 01d30fcf
    P8 : c0000005 P9 : 00000008

    C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb27d.dir00\appcompat.txt

    I tried to run the program anyway and it closed.

    I then ran with out update and it found:
    re.exe C:\program files\registry easy Probably win.worm.virus

    I clicked cure and got "incurable.deleted." in the action column.

    I ran custom scan and got some virus:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\virus Archive contains infected objects Moved.
    There was no icon to click, next to files found and I could not find a report.

    I rebooted and ran again and was able to update. I ran the scan again.

    It found four, I clicked select all and move.

    rebooted.

    Seems better now.

    I've attached the log.

    Thanks for your help, for the first time I feel like I am making progress.

    Not sure what it may have removed in the first few attempts, but the log you attached only found items in you system restore folders and then it mistook SDFix and MGTools as infections.

    Let's see what this does:
    Go here and download
    SysClean

    You will need to download two additional files, one for viruses and the other for spyware. Instructions for which ones to download are found here:

    http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt

    After running SysClean, attch the log from it.

    Let's just do this so I can look at new logs:

    First you need to move Combo directly to your desktop...not in a folder on the desktop as you have it here:
    c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Desktop\FIX\ComboFix.exe

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\64FE6EC

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\64FE6EC

    DirLook::
    C:\4bc286b150a2b8fbceaa13ed

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    I had trouble running the MGtools, please see the attachment.

    Your logs are clean...

    You are running Symnatec software....so you need to remove this:
    ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS --> find all traces of it and delete them.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
