    Hi All

I have a problem with spyware & trojans on my Dell desktop using Win XP ('03), but also before this arose i had an ongoing problem starting a couple of weeks ago when booting the pc & when opening MS outlook & some other applications - a window came up "Preparing to Install windows Installer" then another message box with "Norton Antivirus 2005 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall & reinstall" & i would have to click "OK" twice to clear & the applications would work fine - not sure if the two are related but haven't got the Norton system disks to reinstall & Dell asking for £50 for 1 month warranty to get support on this problem!

So the initial symptom of spyware & trojans was Internet explorer go straight to "secure32.html" page - this would default as home page despite changing & still does - not sure how to get this changed - looking at similar post on this forum they changed something in regedit but not that IT literate - can someone help? And also got loads of pop ups & pc crashing & applications not working - so i went through the Malware removal steps, only thing i couldn't do was download Java in safemode, but did in Normal & seemed to be fine. The problems still persisted - cannot use MS Outlook & other programs - i download trading data daily & this doesn't work. Popups so far have gone, & pc seems to be running quicker, also downloaded & ran HijackThis.

    So 3 problems:
Windows Installer / Norton Antivirus error message
Secure32.html default as IE homepage - cannot change in IE
Trojans / Spyware still existing after running Remove Malware

I have attached logs for Activescan, Bitdefender, & HijackThis. I have missed something?

Your help would be much appreciated, so far found the forums very helpful, & really appreciate the advice & links to freedownloads etc. Don't know what i'd be doing now if hadn't found this site.

    Many thanks,
    R

Let's get an installed programs list from HijackThis too!
    • Run HijackThis, click Open the Misc Tools section
    • Click Open Uninstall Manager
    • Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
    • Click Save, to save it to a file where you can find it.
    • Attach the uninstall_list.txt file to your next message.

Also run the below procedure and attach the runkeys.txt log.

    Using GetRunKey

You should use Add/Remove programs to uninstall the below old version of Sun Java
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysTray] C:\Program Files\ygdw.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [0mcamcap] C:\WINDOWS\system32\0mcamcap.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [0mcamcap] C:\WINDOWS\system32\0mcamcap.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: xptptt - xptptt.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete (some or many of these may not be found, just continue)
C:\Documents and Settings\Wusski\Local Settings\Temp <--- delete all files in this Temp folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\Wusski\Start Menu\Programs\AdwarePunisher
    C:\Documents and Settings\Wusski\Start Menu\Programs\RemedyAntispy
    C:\Documents and Settings\Wusski\Start Menu\Programs\SpyGuard
C:\Program Files\sbl\dialers\sexy_blondes\sexy_blondes.exe <--- delete the whole sbl folder
    C:\Program Files\AdwarePunisher <--- delete the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\RemedyAntispy <--- delete the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\SpyGuard <--- delete the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\ygdw.exe
    c:\windows\system32\azebar.xml
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\0mcamcap.exe
    c:\windows\system32\winsrv32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\rfscanax.dll

Additional step to delete files in the Downloaded Program Files folder :
    - Click Start, Run, and enter cmd in the box and click OK. This opens a command prompt windows.
    - Enter the following command lines each followed by the enter key
    cd C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\
    attrib -r -h -s azesearch.inf
    del azesearch.inf
    exit

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.
Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

.....actually just cleared Internet settings using step 3 & this has restored to original - so only the WinInstaller issue & whatevers in the latest HJT.

Thanks again for your time & effort!

Why didn't you do this as instructed before attaching your HJT log. You log still showed the below:
Are those lines all fixed now?

You should post a message on this in the Software Forum. It looks like you have some installation that has failed or is corrupted or incomplete. That is probably why the installed shows as running:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe

If those secure32.html lines are gone, then your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

i ran it exactly as you said in that order but had to for some reason redo the internet settings before it restored to my homepage. the log is clean of secure32 stuff.
thanks for your help, yep already read how to prevent being attacked by malware in future....very useful.

You're welcome and thanks for the additional info on having to redo the IE settings. Perhaps one of the antispyware programs was getting in the way. This happens quite often because the are blocking changes. Even changes you make are blocked. They typically will inform you have an attempted change and ask permission (at least for start and search pages they do).

    Surf safely.

Hi chaslang - Norton still says i have spyware, can i just run spybot or other apps separately or do i have to go through all the steps in remove malware section.....i do not seem to have any issues but it says that it could be keylogger which i know is something i do not want running on there?

Also - is there any advice on these forums about reading the HJT & other apps logs or self help learning on such issues so i don't have to bug you lot each time?

    Thanks,
    R

Post a log from Norton that tells exactly what it is finding and where it is finding it.

One of the sticky threads is a tutorial on HijackThis but you must remember that HijackThis is not a spyware scanner and it does not show all possible malware issues on a PC. That is why we use it last and require all the other tools to be run first.
