"Security Tool" infection-removed but one file reappears

    Hi-

    One of our Vista PCs was infected with Security Tool. After following your steps for cleaning Vista, the popups stopped, and MalwareBytes reports the system is clean; yet on re-boot, I run MalwareBytes again, and it reports an infected Rootkit file in c:\Windows\System\Drivers. I follow the steps to clean it; I am told to re-boot. When I re-boot and run the scan again, I get a report that the same file is still present and infected.

    Can I just ignore this file, or will the infection come back?

    Thanks.

    -Andrew

    I will attach them shortly; last time it took so long to get a response, because you guys were backed up, that I thought I'd just get the initial post up as quickly as possible! :)

    Thanks.

    Yup, that's the one I found in your logs. So lets do this:

    First use add/remove programs to uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 7

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    rjbgbf

    File::
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\rjbgbf.sys
    C:\Windows\temp\102cf0da9f10dd0ae079e2ba.tmp
    C:\Windows\temp\3d24097f3e11e8f1a5a97d00.tmp
    C:\Windows\temp\5ee73d47e92a379f27532b38.tmp
    C:\Windows\temp\648da37150083001a2aae07c.tmp
    C:\Windows\temp\84c19856d365cf9237b7c469.tmp
    C:\Windows\temp\a87c11d074ebbd8911f3518f.tmp

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    OK, that was weird. After I dragged the text file onto ComboFix.exe and it finished running, clicking on any icon, on the Desktop or the Start menu, resulted in an error message, something about a Registry key being marked for deletion.

    I logged off, then back on, and everything seemed to work again, so I went ahead and downloaded Java and ran GetLogs.bat.

    Attached are the 2 logs:

    Looks good.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Tim-

    Thank you so much for your time, I really appreciate what you guys do. It restores some of the faith in humankind which was destroyed by the Malware programmers.

    Everything looks good. I just have one question, of an informational nature: I came across a claim that having the paid version of MBAM installed would have prevented the Security Tool malware from installing in the first place. Does MajorGeeks have any basis for evaluating this claim? Considering the lost time spent dealing with this infection, I think I could convince the boss to pay for a few installations if it's worthwhile. I will also be looking into getting him to donate to MajorGeeks!

    Thanks again for your help.

    While it is possible that the pro version of MBAM might have kept this particular infection off your machine, it might not kept any future infection off. The reason I say this is that all AV and AS programs need to be updated and there is always a lag between when a new piece of malware gets on the web and the time it takes the protection software writers to update their software for that new strain.

    That is why we don't usually recommend paying for any AV or AS software. Just make sure to keep them updated.

    OK, thanks. It seemed like MBAM was saying that the pro version of their software would stop "zero-day" exploits/malware, and it sounded a little "too good to be true", so I thought I'd check with someone who had the experience to evaluate the claim.

    Thanks again for your time.
