    Hi there MajorGeeks

    Hope y'all doing swell : )

I've been hit by SettingsModifier:Win32/PossibleHostsFileHijack and consequently a number of other adware, spyware, malware, trojans, etc.

I followed the steps outlined in the, what seemed to be the default guide for malware removal, READ ME & REMOVE template.

I have attached the following logs for whoever would be able & willing to help me out:

    RogueKiller
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    TDSSKiller
    HitmanPro
    MGtools

I noticed a number of bad things being picked up during the various scans, but the instructions of the READ ME tutorial said to ignore everything for now and rather seek professional help from the MajorGeek jedi's.

Obi1, where are you? Save me, o great Obi : )

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You probably put these entries there yourself with some software you ran. Perhaps Covenant Eyes ? It is just redirecting all the possible internal URLs for Google to the USA based IP address.

Run Malwarebytes again and this time have it fix what it finds.

Uninstall the below very old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    Java 7 Update 51
    Java(TM) 6 Update 14

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment Make sure that when you see the form asking about installing Ask Toolbar that you uncheck this.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\ProgramData\InstallMate\{C600A6A9-3422-4048-A2A3-7C001DE3845F}\Custom.dll
    C:\Windows\Temp\*.*
    C:\Users\Nat\AppData\Local\Temp\*.*

    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\{BAB04997-93AD-4C13-805A-0409199700BB}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{1AA60054-57D9-4F99-9A55-D0FBFBE7ECD3}]
    [-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-6932132-514996157-941834594-1000\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\DOMStorage\buenosearch.com]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks ChasLang!
I'm gonna follow those steps right now.
Just something else I noticed over the last wile:
The top menu bar of my Task Manager has disappeared and I can't seem to find a way to get it back. Do you think it is somehow related to these infections?
Will post an update soon on the findings after following your initial feedback.
Many thanks thus far, Master Jedi ; )

    Hi again ChasLang

I followed the steps you layed out. I think after running JTR I lost all means to gain an internet connection.

I removed the old Java installations and installed the latest version. I used the 32bit version.

Malwarebytes found no new threats, so I just deleted all the previous files that it had in quarantine.

I have attached the following logs for your perusal.
    > OTM
    > JTR
    > MGtools

It almost started to feel like my pc was starting to speed up, but when I rebooted after running MGtools, Microsoft Security Essentials was straight back in there saying that it had had spotted a threat, viz. our good old friend: SettingsModifier:Win32/PossibleHostsFileHijack

My next step on my side so long is to download and install of the outstanding security and other Windows 7 updates via the Windows Update tool.

Thanks again for looking into this for me. Much appreciated!

Nope. It is from you. You did not really have any infections. Just some junk. If you double left click along the border of Task Manager, the menus go away. Similar they come back if already gone.

I don't see why! Nothing was removed that would break your internet connection. Is it okay now?

As stated, those are things you probably put there. They are not problems. If you don't want all those items in your hosts file then either edit them out manually back to a default or see if MSE can fix it for you.
