Shut Down Problem...Blue Death Screen

    Good Day MG's -
    I have a laptop w/WinXP Hm that runs okay (now that the spyware has been cleaned), it is virus free per AVG. When I try to shut down, it begins shut down and then flashes to blue screen. The blue screen goes by so quick I can only get a glimpse of the error meesage, not enough time to read. The computer then reboots and thus I'm unable to shut down in a conventional manner.
    Can you offer some advice?
