Slaving my old hard drive

My current hard drive is going to be slaved to a new drive which will have Windows etc installed and become the main drive. I want to keep a lot of the data thats on the D and E partitions of the old drive but obviously the C drive will have to be doctored somehow so the new install of Windows on the new drive is clean.

So in an arse about face kind of way I'm asking what has to be done to the old drive to enable all this* and is there any risk of me losing the data on my D and E drives?

(Yes I know I should back everything up but I can't get the DVD burner to work :( )

(Sorry if this is more a software question.)

(* The short answer will do as someone else is doing the hard work, I just want to know if there's anything I need to do beforehand. In particular saving my IE bookmarks and Outlook Express folders to the D or E drive.)

I would leave the old disk (C,D,& E) out of the system until the O/S is loaded on the new disk. This will make the new drive "C". Then the old disk can be added as a second disk, and the drive labels should "increment" up one letter. (ie; the old C,D,& E will then become D, E, & F.) You can then copy what you want from D: (old C: ), then format D: leaving E & F intact.

I would agree, Do the fresh install on the new drive, get your antivirus and spyware stuff up to date, then once you are ready slave the old drive, then scan/clean it when windows finds it as E:/ if all is right with the world, move the data you intend to keep to a folder on the new drive, and use disk management to remove the partitions on the old drive, format the whole old drive and have a media drive, that isn't likely to be corrupted by malware. Good Luck
