Well my computer recently got another virus. I tried running system restore to get rid of it, but the virus is still here. My CPU usage is stuck at 100%, and internet explorer runs really slowly. Most of the folders and other programs run fine, so it seems like the internet is the only thing really messing up. I attached the logs and such, but I think the software may be outdated. If so, please inform me. Also, I couldn't get root repeal to work, so the logs for that isn't attached. If you need anything else, please tell me.

Attach the log from combofix whilst I review your other logs. :)

Also, considering there are many many bad files that need deleting, and the fact that yes, your copies of SAS and MBAM are out of date, please update them as follows:

Open up Malware Bytes, locate the update tab > update > rescan > fix all it finds and attach the log.

    For SAS:

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

Please *do* attach the combofix log, ( now is the time to run it as per the instructions!)

    Then:

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Alright well after I ran combofix, there was this red icon with an x in it in my tray that said some software was out of date and my computer was at risk, and I should click the balloon to fix the problem. I didn't, and the icon is gone now. Also, I couldn't get the Malwarebytes scan because it wouldn't let me update. Is there any way you can get me a link to manually update it? And when I ran MG Tools, it came up with an error and then just stayed at a screen saying "Running processdll.exe", so I don't know if the MGTools finished scanning or not.

    As explained in the R&R:

If you have a problem automatically installing the update due to no internet connection or other reason, you can manually download and install the update from here

Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 10
    • Viewpoint Media Player

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Then run Malware Bytes and attach the log it generates.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and include the new mbam log.

I would like for you to tell me how things are currently running at this point.

Things seem to back back to normal now. The CPU usage is back to what it usually stays at, and the computer isn't slow anymore. If you see anything still wrong let me know, but the computer seems to be fine now.

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
Now Run Ccleaner (Not the registry section, simply the cleaner)

I am seeing remnants from Norton so... uninstall: LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation) from add/remove programs, then:
Please give the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) a run > reboot your machine and then run it again for good measure.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Thanks so much for telling me Norton was still there. I had no idea that software never fully uninstalled on my computer. Here are the logs you needed.

    You're welcome.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Run Ccleaner.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Uninstall MyWaySearchAssistant from add/remove programs.

Now I think we are very close to wrapping this up but I am curious about something. Some temp files that will not be deleted through combofix. I am not sure that they are malicious, but I like to be thorough and cover all bases.

    • C:\WINDOWS\temp\ZKT{DDEF538B-BF6B-44D2-9E0F-53DFE48973D3}.tmp
    • C:\WINDOWS\temp\ZKT{FE0AFF83-3B75-4545-8D20-CB5D48AFCBF7}.tmp

I am unsure what the files relate to but it could be DNSSEC Zone Key Tool

Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      C:\WINDOWS\temp\ZKT{DDEF538B-BF6B-44D2-9E0F-53DFE48973D3}.tmp
    • At the upload site, click the browse button.
    • Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the file(s) we need scanned and click "submit file"
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

Then do the same for the below files and also let me know the results:

    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\temp\ZKT{FE0AFF83-3B75-4545-8D20-CB5D48AFCBF7}.tmp
Could you please get this: ZKT{DDEF538B-BF6B-44D2-9E0F-53DFE48973D3}.tmp into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

Post that and the jotti results. :)

Did you ever use anything Kaspersky related?

  14. badreligion93

No I don't think so. The only things I've used for antivirus were Norton and Verizon, and the stuff in the Read and Run Me First.

Ya can't beat a bit of Bob! ;)

I don't think those files are anything to worry about. You can follow final steps now. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
