    Welcome......So you want to "Fold"

    The "Novice" version

    What is "Folding@Home":

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project (DC), which means computers all over the world are combining their computational power and working together to solve big problems. For example, another DCing project Seti@Home searches radio logs for traces of extra-terrestrial inteligent life. This is a huge project and even utilising the most advanced supercomputer in existance, it would still take decades to go through all the data.

The Folding@Home project mostly concentrates on how protiens fold, running complex simulations. The master server computers in Stanford university churn out new protiens to run simulations on constantly, with the aim of finding one which responds to a specific goal the scientists specify. This might be a mis-fold, or a response that causes a specific disease.

By running Folding@Home, we are donating our idle CPU time to help cure diseases and further medical research!. A very abundant resource in the average Geek household, which we are more than willing to part with to further medial science.

Folding@Home is designed so that a group of people can form a team, which many technically minded computer users have formed. Major Geeks is not an exception! Since the user base her at MG like to make their machines run as well as they possibly can, they are well suited for such competition! With just 14 members, we've climbed the charts steadily from the start (or re-start!). Right now there are over thirty thousand teams in the League!

Okay sounds great...But how do "I" do it:

Okay, the simple way is to go to http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html fill in your Major Geeks username to check for its usability (This is so the rest of us will know who you are, a different username might lead to some confusion) and download the "Graphical Client" as with all downloads check it with your Virus scanner, then install.

This will be the "Folding@Home Icon" [IMG] created on your "TaskBar"

And thats it.............."Folding@Home" is installed and working......and you don't even know its there, other than the appearance of the little icon in your taskbar............Sweet huh

Okay now you want to know just what your little "Folding Engine" is doing ...Right........Well left "click" on the F@H Icon and you will see something like this

If you right "click on the F@H icon you will see this

The Status tab will open another and the Log file tab will be in that if you open that you will get a "Notepad" file that shows your progress.

Okay, so now you are an "Official Folding Geek" feels kinda good don't it, just remember if Corporal Punishment(C.P.) comes by he may ask you to drop and give him Twenty "Private"LOL

Last Minute Note:Just remember NO your computer does not need to be ON or Online all the time. F@H only goes online to recieve/send data which is twice per Work Unit(WU) usually about six seconds for both, and YES you can use Dial-Up as the file sizes are very small...Thanks Bill for the Heads-Up........Remember your computer is only "Folding" when it is turned on, if you are going to use a program that is a great resource hog ie photo image work, autocad or the like you can simply turn off the "Folding Engine" by a simple right click on the Folding Icon then on "Quit", Folding will stop and will not restart till you either reboot or restart in programs. You can also pause work by choosing the "Pause Work" tab, then when finished just click "Resume Work" tab

I have "Locked" this thread, as it is only intended as a Tutoral. If you have any questions or comments about this thread please post a thread in the "Folding Forum" or you can PM me

    Thanks your "Folding" Gnome
