About two weeks ago somebody took over my wireless router, ever since then more and more pop ups have shown up on my pc and my laptop. Just about everytime I try to open up a program on my laptop it says virtual memory is to low cannot open file. When I can get on the internet either popups take over or it freezes up. I downloaded spybot search and destroy on my pc and it worked great. I downloaded it on my laptop and when I try to search for updates it says (socket error #10061 connection refused). It will not let me scan my laptop until I download the updates. How do I get around the error? I also tried to run it in safe mode and when I tried to check for updates it said (socket error cannot connect)

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Are you behind a proxy server or is do you have a firewall installed that could be blocking Spybot on the laptop?

If you are behind a proxy server. Do the below:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings. About 2/3 of the way down the option tree there is a category "Web update". Check the last item in the list "Use proxy to connect to update server". A pop-up will come up were you can enter the information required.

If my previous message does not help you and you believe you are having malware issues, then you must run thru the below procedures as best as possible.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis

Maybe I should of mentioned this in the beginning but I know very little about computers! Where would I find the "host" information

Why do you want to look at your hosts file? Did you read and try what I gave you in my first message?

The location of the hosts file is depends on which Operating System you are using and you did not tell us that either.

The easiest way to repair a hosts file is to recreate it with the below tool which works for all OS's:

Download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
