Sony DVD-RW 510A running in PIO...

Hi all.

My DVD-RW drive has been slow for a while, and I finally noticed why: it's running in PIO mode!!

What's weird is, I know it HASN'T been running in PIO mode all this format's life; this is a reletively recent happening (I can tell, since burning anything to DVD-R slows the PC down madly, and Nero's Data Verification takes 30 minutes/disk :/).

I've tried setting it to "DMA if Avalible", which did nothing; and I've tried uninstalling the drive, re-detecting it upon reboot, which did nothing too.

Does anyone have any ideas as to fixing this drive up, back into DMA mode?

Edit: Doh, I'm running Windows XP Pro (SP1 Installed), and my mobo is an MSI-6172.

Have you checked how the device is set in the BIOS? Possibly any changes to that lately?

 

I kinda thought "bingo" when you mentioned Bios, but nah, I couldn't find nothing in there.

The only setting that seemed to relate to the disk drives were in the same section as the HardDisk (IDE settings page? Whatever). Both disk drives were set to "Auto". I tried setting the DVD-RW to "CD/DVD", and then twaking the Fast Programed I/O Mode to stuff like 2,4, auto etc (its description mention "PIO"). I HAVE pluged the drive in and out a couple of times recently (power problems :/), but my problems are fixed now, so that hasn't been done in a while.

Basically, it's STILL in PIO.

Any other ideas?

try going to the sony site and dwnoading any firmware updates
