    Hello my sister has a....

Sony Vaio Model: PCG-71312L sub model: VPCEB11FM

after getting a virus she took it to a repair shop to have fixed. The morons called her and said they formatted the HD (by wipeing it clean) asked for the recovery disk (they don't come with disc) so she brings it to me..

I was able to use Partition Magic to boot and view the HD. Yes, they completely wiped out the "RECOVERY" partition So I have no Recovery partition, no recovery disc, and no media disc for this unit.. I called "Sony" and there "Out Of Stock" for the recovery/media disk.

At this point I burned a Win 7 Home Premium 64bit.iso and attempted to install it..

It opens and begins to run for a min then says......

A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB flash drive, please insert it now.
Note. If the windows installation media is in the drive, you can safely remove it for this step."

Since there is no operating system how can I get the "drivers" to the HD that there asking for? I am stuck at this point.. Thanks in advance for any help

Last week they were out of the Kit. I was able to contact Sony parts and locate a Media Recovery Kit for $54 and ordered it. (will be here in 5 days)

    I hope it works!
    Thanks

Is there a chance to "Recover" the whiped HD partitions? I would need something Bootable as there is no operating system on HD
    Thanks

Nothing left to recover if the hd was formatted.

I've had success many times recovering data from 'formatted' drives, the data isn't completely wiped, it's the partition and (usually) the indices to the files that are gone. It does sometimes require more 'professional' software, though both TestDisk and MBRWork (included in TestDisk last time I checked) have both enabled me to do it on several occasions.

    * All bets are off if the formatting was of the low-level type. And there's no guarantee that all files will be recovered, or even if they are in a usable format.

I was able to recover a lot of "files" for her. Then I prepped the HD nice and cleanly formatted for the "Recover/Media Kit" that's coming in a few days so we should be ok (if the disc work)
    Thanks

I received the "Recovery Media Kit" from Sony. I used the fist CD and it times out re-installing windows. At this point I turned to the Hard-Drive. I ran seagate tools and it shows a SMART tripped failure

The Hard Drive in is a SAMSUNG Spinpoint HM321HI 320GB Just to make things easy, I purchased the "Exact" hard drive from a reputable online PC store in NY..

    http://www.primelec.com/laptop-part...320-0gb-2-5-in-laptop-hard-drive-sata-hm321hi

The hard drive there selling is a OEM brand new unopened replacement that came from Sansung in bulk and have not been partitioned nor formatted ever. (so the tec there says)... The HD will be here tomorrow.

    My question is:
since the drive has not been partitioned nor formatted, can I simply put the hard drive in start the PC and inset the "Recovery Media disc" and install? (basically will the win7 recover disk add the necessary partitions etc by itself to the new Hard Drive)

    Thank you

After getting the new Hard drive, and the recovery CD the issue is fixed. The moral to this story is.. If you have an issue with SMART error and it tells you the hard drive is bad and backup and replace drive, simply replace the hard drive. I seen over 700+ post were people want to disable SMART monitoring in the BIOS (don't waste your time) it's NOT the solution. Buy a Hard drive and move on with life.. Thanks for all the help

So I take it the Recovery Media kit was able to install on a new hard drive with no problems.

Lots of people also do not make the recovery DVDs when they get a new computer. I always make the recovery DVDs and if offered, a program and driver DVD too.
There is no such thing, in my opinion, as having too many recovery disks!
