My parents recently bought a new computer, and I got the old one after my first computer crashed after a whopping 9 years of service. Now, I salvaged the ram card from inside it and added about 600 Kb of ram to the computer.

Now onto buisness. This computer's status (as far as malware is concerned) is rather dubious... sometimes, it was there, sometimes it wasn't. I couldn't keep track of it very well, so I was wondering.... what would you recommend I run to make sure that the computer is malware-free? Furthermore, my computer doesn't have any commercial virus protection... what would you recommend? Also, remember, I don't have any money, so, I doubt that I could get much as far as A/V software goes...

As a side note, I did a destructive system restore, but, on my last computer, I learned that that isn't an automatic cure for viruses and whatnot... I'd rather be completely sure.

If you decide to go through the READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide, I would recommend waiting until we are finished before installing an AV as we will be disabling it a lot through the procedure anyway.
