    Hello

Im sure you have dealt with this problem before and i have read some previous postings regarding this issue so i have run a diagnostic with a program that has been recommended by MG's as i know you cant recommend anything without know system information

To save some time I attached the required information

I would really appreciate some assistance as i have been trying to find the solution for this problem by troubleshooting through Windows XP help, HP Website and a few other desperate options to no avail.

I originally had Windows Vista installed on my new laptop but have chosen to install XP Home as i prefer this OS and it seems to be a little more user friendly on my notebook

Now that i have done this my notebook works great and doesnt have a problem trying to think whilst doing two things at the same time

The fall-back of this though is that my sound drivers no longer work even though it says they are still 'enabled'...

Many thanks in advance for your assistance

    Kindest Regards,

    Ohm!

OK, first does it say enabled but has not been started? (That would be in Device Manager>your Audio Device>Properties)

Look in Device Manager in System and see if you have Plug and Play (PnP) Software Device Enumerator listed there.

I have done as you suggested:

Look in Device Manager in System and see if you have Plug and Play (PnP) Software Device Enumerator listed there...

and i am told that - This device is working properly.

i cannot see anything about getting it to 'start', sorry

look forward to your next suggestion:cool

So, Plug and Play (PnP) Software Device Enumerator is there, I take it.

Ok, this next bit is a little advanced but follow it step by step and it won't be hard.

    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location (Desktop is good)
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

If you get stuck along the way, I'll be here for awhile.

This is the XP version of the Conexnt HDA driver: (this will download the file immediately)
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/sof...6000/sp35682.zip

It is a zip file, so un-zip it and look for setup.exe, then double click it.

    hey bud,

i have clicked on the link twice and ownloaded the file presented but it did not come across as a zip file

i then made sure i had WinZip installed

then i even tried pasting the link direct into my browser address bar and came up with nothing

sorry, am i doing something wrong?

p.s. i tried to attach the files that downloaded so you could have a look at them but it seems that they are invalid file types...

    cheers, Ohm :)

Does the file name look like this: f00gluug? (see thumbnail)
I have 7Zip installed for opening zip files and that file opens fine for me and as you can see in the thumbnail, they are zip files.
In case you need to use 7Zip, here is the link:

I installed 7Zip as you suggested but still no luck

some of the files inside the Zip file were invalid file types

How do you display the screen shot like you do? I would like to show you what the contents of the Zip file look like but i dont seem to be able to do a screen dump through this chat client. (in some respects im a basic user, in others im intermediate)

Please advise the next course of action

Appreciate your patience and most of all, your help!

Get the files on screen, press your "Print Scr" key, open Paint, in the menu area, select "Edit" select "Paste". Choose the "Select" tool (it is the little square box in the upper right of the toolbar), choose the part of the picture you want to show by clicking at a corner of it and dragging the cursor to the opposite corner. (a box with a dotted line should appear around your selected area), Click "Image" and choose "Crop". Then save the picture.

Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my screenshot.", so that it will submit.

ok thats how i thought it was done too...

i tried to do it that way to start with but didnt have any success doing a screendump into ms paint OR photoshop

instead i have just taken a pic of the screen with my camera phone and cropped it in photoshop

im starting to think there are some other underlying issues with putting an OS on this laptop that is other than the original OS that was on it...

not only does the sound driver not work but ive also noticed that my wireless client does not recognise that the modem is installed and that the driver is enabled

this isnt so important to me right now as the sound issue as i can use ethernet atm but im sure at some point it will become a bother...

Are you trying to open the .sys file? You don't need to.
Just double click the Setup.exe file and the driver should install. Or is that what you did and got the "Invalid file" message?

PS. In Photoshop (I haven't used it) try right clicking the work area in it after taking a screen shot and see if you have an option like "Paste as new image". That's how I get them into my photo editor. You may also have to press Control and Print scr at the same time. (Different PC's use different methods)

    ok

i clicked on the setup.exe, the installation program goes through the motions of loading the drivers and all looks very promising, then out of the blue my system crashes and i get a quick flash of the blue screen of death before my system begins a restart

at first i thought i had done something to create this reaction but after trying the setup.exe three times the exact same thing happens and my system crashes

It's possible there's corruption in the driver download, I'll have to see if I can find a different download of the same driver. I'll have it later today, I hope.
Can you tell me what the BSOD error message is?
Also look in your Event Viewer and see what it says.
Post those for me and you might want to take a look at this link below and post the results too.

alright, i think/hope that i did everything you wanted me to right... :)

    please see attached

and whereas now i get the feeling that i most probably should have given you the most recent mini dump, i did the first with the intention of giving you all three that i have.

tried to do the other two but i got lost after the first one, was starting to go cross-eyed as i work a full time job in front of a computer too...

anyway, i have a feeling that you will see what you need to in the first one anyhow...

    thank you:)

I'm not that great at reading those logs. The Event log say that hpqwmiex, iPod Service, and Bonjour Service cannot be found. Out of those 3, it would be the hpqwmiex I would think is important.
It also says "This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account."
Try re-setting those services for these errors. (Do this later, if you are having problems with Ipod or the Bonjour thingy)
But I don't think that's causing the BSOD.

Your minidump log says that this probably caused the crash: pci.sys ( pci!PciAddDevice+12a ) It also states this: The PCI Bus driver detected inconsistency problems in its internal structures and could not continue and this: SystemResourcesList->Flink chain invalid. Resource may be corrupted, or already deleted.
It looks like the driver I gave you may be the cause because it would be part of the PCI link.
Un-install the driver (if it is showing in Device Manager) , delete the set-up for it, and run CCleaner's Registry tool.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html

I would also restore back to a point before the driver install. See if everything runs smooth after that (sound won't be back yet)
    Then install this chipset driver:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...All&OSFullName=All+Operating+Systems&lang=eng

Look in the system section of Device Manager for the Micosoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) driver, if it is there, dis-able it, and uninstall it.
Install this driver (it is from HP and is for XP) and reboot. Check your sound and to see if the driver shows in Device Manager.
    Conexant High Definition Audio Driver

You may need to also install the UAA driver. (I wasn't sure if it was included with Conexant driver or if it is already on your system) If you don't have sound yet, install this:
Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp33867)
Re-boot again. You should have sound now. (knocks on wood)

It's possible that you may have to reverse the order of install with the CHDA and UAA divers, but with Realtek drivers it is audio driver than UAA, so I believe the same is true here.

    Mate!!!

    You are BOMB!:major

I tried installing the Conexant High Definition Audio Driver before installing Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp33867) and the driver was not able to load, so i tried it the other way around as you suggested and still had no luck installing the driver, both ways produced error messages.

then i got really, (how to put it?!), CBF'd and thought "gees, what the F*#%! maybe i should just reload Vista!!!" :cry

i then went and um, put on some porn and thought, "hey, atleast i can see it if i can hear it"...

...it took me oh, about 5 seconds before i realised what i was hearing was NOT coming from the TV

it was coming from the porn on my LAPTOP!!!!!

You did it dude, you got my sound back, and not just so i could enjoy porn

so i could listen to music, watch dvd's, presentations, clips, and play games AND not have to listen to the nonversitility of annoying beeps coming from my laptop to indicate an action had taken place

Thank you so much for helping me, youre good! :cool

No way in the seven hells would i have been able to do that on my own!!!

...dont suppose you know anything about wireless modem drivers?

    Thanks, Ohm

I was beginning to wonder if we were going to get it solved. I was at the bottom of my bag of tricks. LOL

Haven't really messed with them, but hey, how hard can a driver install be? roflmao
Try starting another thread with some info about it and include your Everest report. If I can't help, there is someone here who can!:major
