SOUND problems

I have had no sound since updating windows on 30th Sept, and downloading IE8 to do it.
It appears I have a file named 'AMPinglo.evt' which I tried to eradicate using File Assassin, but it's lodging itself back on board ('System32' has the file apparently). I don't even know if this AMPing thing is the issue, but something won't let me update the sound driver despite my using several methods to try and do it.
The local p/c and electronics shop (Maplins) suggest changing out my sound card, but I don't think that will help will it?
I already tried scans and update engines, as well as manually tracking and troubleshooting - but I can't make it out and the facilities used keep getting locked out/rolled back.
I'll be grateful if you can give this your attentions.
    Thanks in anticipation

Moved to the software forum as I doubt this is a malware issue.

Have you tried doing a system restore to before that date?
