It could be a number of reasons.

A.) Are the speakers turning on preopperly? Is the green power light on?
B.) Have you made a clean install or any hardware changes to your system lately?
C.) Do you have a driver for your sound card?

my speakers were working fine, then they stopped working, then they came on again but were very quiet on full power, and they are once again not working. They are advent speakers.

Try a driver upgrade. If there is no upgrade available, try uninstalling the driver and re-install it. If that dosen't work then your speakers may actually be dying. Or you may have blown them if you like them blearing your music/sounds quite loud.

Try using a friends speakers and see if they work.
