    Hi!

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

I used to have Spybot search and destroy working on my computer no problem. Until I had to do a complete wipe clean of the computer and redownload everything.

Since then, Spybot just will not work properly.

What happens is , it does what looks like a good scan for problems and finds quite a few.(14 different items ,with 55 entries in all) When I click to fix selected problems it asks me if I want to mend them and I click yes. But it doesn't mention anything about making a restore point like it used to and it just ticks everything as if they've been fixed instantly.

And on doing a further scan , they are all still there.

I have removed and redownloaded it several times and it just behaves in the same way.

    Any ideas?

What version of Spybot are you running and what is the date of the last definitions update. (Click Help, About to see this).

    Follow the below steps exactly:
    - uninstall Spybot
    - reboot (this is important)
    - after reboot delete the C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy folder
    - now re-install Spybot and make sure it is this version: SpyBot-Search & Destroy

    Any change!

I'd never deleted the spybot folder on C before ( thought it was all deleted when you removed the program)

Thought that might make a difference but it didn't , just the same.

I had Spybot version 1.4 , updated on 1st september 06 . Did everything you said but no change.

I have no idea why it won't work on my system anymore. I used to use it a lot before I had to reload everything from scratch.

If I can't ever get it to work again, any suggestions for the best alternative? I have Adaware but Spybot was a good sidekick for it.

If you are sure you do not have any malware that could be causing these problems then you may want to try asking about this in the support forums for Spybot ( http://forums.spybot.info/ )

Thank you I'll do that.:) Although I can't be sure it isn't some malware.

    You're welcome.

The only way to completely know you are malware free is given below. Obviously you should just skip the Spybot step since your cannot get it to work.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
