I am trying to clean off a friend's laptop that had tons of junk on it. I have followed all the steps in the "DO NOT POST UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS" thread and still have a recurring spyware program that pops up when IE is started. I run all the cleaners over and over, but it still remains. I believe it to be a VX2 variant that Ad-Aware cannot clean even with the VX2 cleaner plugin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please follow the steps below exactly as written:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Thanks for your help. Here is my HJT log as an attachment. I hope I ran it correctly (with all the defaults).

Is there a reason you did not run the RAVantivirus online scan as indicated in the READ ME?

I got an activeX error when trying to run it in safe mode as instructed. It said either I was not logged on with administrative rights (which I was) or had a older version of IE (which I don't). I could not get it to work.

I will go back to safe mode and make another attempt at a scan.

    Thanks.

It is important (as indicated in the READ ME) to tell us info like this. Don't bother trying to re-run it right now.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [svtcin] C:\WINDOWS\system32\n20050308.a.Stub.EXE

Is this next line valid? Is it something you installed? Is it Hot Rod American Street Drag? If not then fix it too.
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HotRodASD.exe] C:\DOWNLO~1\HOTROD~1.EXE /r

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Zwv9RWfpQ] avtlt1.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\n20050308.a.Stub.EXE
    c:\windows\system32\avtlt1.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

ok. I ran all the steps. That hotrod program was loaded on this laptop by my friend's son before he asked me to attempt to clean it.

Sorry about leaving out the error in trying to run RAVantivirus. I ran so many scans for several hours last night, that I truly did not remember it this evening until you reminded me.

The 2 files were not found in the windows32 folder. I verified that all hidden files should be displayed. I also searched the entire hard drive and didn't find them.

    deleted everything in prefetch

    reset internet options

rebooted in normal mode and everything seems fine. I no longer get any popups after starting up IE. Attached is the HJT log. The only entry that doesn't look good is this one...

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

...but I didn't touch anything in HJT and left it. I have always thought that Viewpoint was spyware or such.

Again....thanks for your help and taking it easy on the n00b.

Viewpoint is junk from AOL (or AIM) that 99.99% of all people never use and were never asked by AOL if they could install it. If you do not need it or use it, uninstall all the Viewpoint stuff you see in Add/Remove programs.

You forgot to attach the HJT log.

    sorry about that.

There are no viewpoint programs listed in the Add/Remove programs list under control panel.

    Attached is the log...

Okay! Since it is not installed, have HJT fix the below line:

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

Then it is time for you to complete the steps in the below thread to help keep you clean:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

Done. Here is the new HJT log.

Good! Now on to: How to Protect yourself from malware!

You need to do these. One thing you are missing is a good firewall. After installing one of them, disable the one in WinXP SP2. It does not provide adequate protection and you must only use one firewall.

    Will do!

Thanks for your help and patience.
