    Have you done any cleaning and maintenance? Ccleaner? Disk check, defragment?

    You know Vista does not defrag all file sizes too? Anything over 64MB vista by default does not defrag. Through command prompts though you can specifically call for a full defragment of files and folders and with the release of Vista you can even defrag your boot too! All done from command prompt and with some cool switches!

    Yes I have done CCleaner, defrag, sckdsk.

    You have sufficient resources. If you boot into safe mode, does it run faster?

    Also, what are you using for security? :wave:wave

    If I go to safe mode it does run faster.

    I use F=PROT Antivirus

    I'm finding this problem but XP is mentioned. I will list things to look at, though I do not have Vista installed, so I have no way of checking if you have the options I'll mention.

    1. Open Windows Explorer and then Folder Options (under Tools in XP) then click the View tab
    Under Files and Folders: uncheck/untick automatically search for network folders and printers
    2.Locate the following key in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay
    By default, the value is 400.
    * If in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/ "MenuShowDelay" is not available, then
    * On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
    "MenuShowDelay"= defaults to 400 on install
    * Change this to a smaller value, such as 100, to speed it up.
    * Close the registry editor.
    3. Right click on an open area of the Desktop.
    * Select Display Properties.
    * Click on the Appearance tab.
    * Click on the Effects button.
    * Uncheck Show shadows under menus.
    4. One of the links in the All Programs list was trying to utilize a network resource. So it was just simply taking time to establish a connection. Once we deleted that program from the All Programs list, the list populates quickly as it should.
    Note: look over your programs in your list to be sure this is not your problem too.

    Plodr:
    #1. Not listed
    #2: Not in the listings - Edit does not have an Add Value option
    #3: Already unchecked
    #4: Do have a MS Office issue that is slowing stuff down. See attached

    So it is faster in safe mode. Okay, can you post a list of your autoruns found in the tools/startup section of cCleaner? But don't use that program to disable any.
    Also, what are you running for security/antivirus? Conflicts from old programs are very common there. :wave:wave :wave

    I am using FProt for Security-Have used it for the last year. This issue is new

    It looks like you either have two anti-virus programs or parts of symantec running along with F-prot? Did you already pay for the F-prot. If not, there are good FREE antivirus programs right here, Avast is the most commonly recommended.

    From your windows, control panel, programs and features, uninstall anything related to symantec or norton, not sure which term it uses. You could also uninstall F-prot from here.

    Then run the Norton uninstall tool;

    Else, your autorun list is reasonable, could be pared down some. I personally don't like any of those taskbars and I don't use windows calendar.:wave:wave

    Ran the Norton Removal and it seems to have helped, BUT, as soon as I click on an Office program the the installer runs the Start Button Hangs up again.
    (see previous attachment). I have no idea what Hybrid program it is referring to

    Something seems to have gone wrong with your office program then. Can you reinstall to see if this fixes it?

    Else, as it runs good in safe mode, download this program, startup standalone;

    http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone_Version_d4359.html

    Boot into safe mode, and open this program to see what is running. This, plus your antivir if it didn't start, is all you need to be running. So go back into normal mode and disable anything not running in safe mode, except the antivirus. You know this will work because you tested this configuration already in the safe mode.

    Then reboot again, how's it run now? :wave:wave

    At least this should take care of the Office problem, though not solved.

    Little confused.:confused
    Do you only have a problem with the screen shot you took of Office or are you referring to the "start" button on the lower left of the desktop taking 30+ seconds to respond?
    Did you try the steps outlined regarding startup management?:wave:wave

    I am having BOTH problems. I think the Office issue is causing the Start button issue.

    I did a Diagnostics on Office and it is telling me that the necessary files have not be downloaded. I checked ALL the programs an the Trusted Site option is ticked in each.

    I am going to Uninstall Office and re-install it. Hopefully that will work.

    I check at Microsoft forums and nothing there seems to fit my issue.

    @sikvik,
    So it looks like this is a trial program?:)

    To the OP, you can download free Open Office from here, just type the terms in the search box. This may satisfy your needs. :wave:wave
