    I am trying to fix my brother-in-law's computer which started out with a virus that popped up dialogs continuously saying it's infected with a virus - Click Here to install Dodgy Antivirus Program X. I don't know if anyone fell for that or not.

    Bad Move #1: after computer became unusable because of all these popups, attempted to start in Safe Mode but hit the wrong key - Press F9 to start Xpress Recovery. System froze and was rebooted and then would not boot up at all.

    Used Windows XP disk to repair windows. Ran Avast two or three times, got it to clean up the multiple viruses it found.

    Bad Move #2: figured that since so much of that malware was found in the system restore points, and it was now clean, toggled system restore.

    System still does not work well or at all. Many programs freeze when trying to run, including Task Manager and Internet Explorer, which won't access any webpages. Computer works OK in safe mode.

    Did everything in the Read and Run First and Windows XP cleaning procedure. Does not seem to have found anything, but nothing has improved. Had to run everything in Safe mode because SAS etc and IE run OK in safe mode and not at all in normal mode.

    Everything seems to now have run except ProcessDll which didn't have .NET framework. Can't seem to install .NET framework either.

    Help would be much appreciated!

    I was also trying to attach the avast scan logs but I can't find them as a text file anywhere, only within the program.

    It's got a lovely selection of malware, including malware-gen, Alureon-IX, Crypto-E, Ertfor, MalOb-CB, FakeVimes...etcetc.

    Follow these instructions in normal mode now please.

    But first delete this shortcut to combofix, you do not need it!

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\desktop\Shortcut to ComboFix.lnk

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    C:\ijji
    File::
    c:\windows\SET29.tmp
    c:\windows\SET8.tmp
    c:\windows\SET4.tmp
    c:\windows\SET3.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ujthga.sys
    Driver::
    qyawepe

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now, still in normal mode:

    Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    How are things running for you now?

    Thanks for your response!
    I can't run combofix in normal mode :(
    First time round hung at the first empty blue window. Restarted and tried again because I think me closing Taskmanager got in its way.
    Second time, it updated itself but complained that Avast is still running. I had previously disabled all avast services according to the instructions and it is not present in the system tray or task manager processes list. So I clicked OK anyway. Then Combofix froze after the 'Combofix is preparing to run...' line.
    Should I follow your instructions still running in safe mode?

    Yes try it in safe mode then. But for the Getlogs.bat I need you to be in normal mode.

    There wasn't a C:/Combofix.txt, this is C:/Combofix/Combofix.txt.
    Computer is running better now. I'll try a few more things and let you know.

    In normal mode? Things are running good?

    Checking those logs now...

    Yeah, still not fixed. Tried to install .NET and some windows updates but it freezes when just starting installation. Internet works now though. Task manager comes up when I ask for it instead of 5min later. Not sure what else to try.

    C:\$AVG <--- Delete this folder. Remnants from avg.

    Open up HiJackthis by navigating to C:\MGTools\analyse.exe double click it to run it > choose None of the above just start the program > Goto config > Misc Tools > and click on the Open Uninstall Manager. Save list to to desktop for easy retrieval and attach it into your next reply. Those logs look clean to me now. :)

    Uninstall list attached. There's stuff all installed on here because of the windows reinstall. Still remnants of loads of rubbish because nothing was really uninstalled.

    Any non-malware related issues that remain can be worked out in another area of the forum, software for example.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thankyou very much for your help! I'll try the Software forum to get it running OK again.
