I ran all of the scans outlined in the instructions to do before posting, but am still getting popup. I think it is mainly the oinadserver. Please take a look at my hjt log. I am running windows xp pro.

    Thanks

    David

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You seem to have skipped step 0 of the READ & RUN ME. I still see ViewPoint Manager installed an it should have already been uninstalled in step 0.

Also you did not attach the two logs requested in step 6 of the READ ME as required. Please attach them now.

Did you configure the below Proxy settings for some reason?

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;dynhost.inetcam.com;register.inetcam.com

Woops, I did skip step zero. I went back and did that and am including a new hjt log as well as the other two logs. I did not configure that proxy setting.

    Thanks for your help.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?auclt.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\ati2evxx.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: rundll.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\DB\Local Settings\Temp <--- delete all file and subfolders in this Temp folder (windows will block a couple)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I was able to do everything except delete the c:\windows\system32\rundll.dll.
It was not protected and did not seem to be running, so I don't know what else to try.

I am still getting pop-ups. Also, Notepad opened with this message when I rebooted in normal mode: [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

Some items I asked you to fix and delete are still there (more than just rundll.dll). Are you sure you selected all of them?

Also did you try to install some kind of software update?
    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\831fd72eff2a5f8b1317d2a30c5933ac\update\update.exe

Let's download two tools we will need:

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of rundll.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the rundll.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of rundll.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now locate the below process in ProcessExplorer and right click on it and select Kill Process.
    C:\DOCUME~1\DB\LOCALS~1\Temp\!update.exe

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Now run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tbvoxg] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WAUCLT~1.EXE
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aida] "C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\ati2evxx.exe" -vt ndrv

    Now run Pocket Killbox:
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK.

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note some of the files listed below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\WAUCLT~1.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\ati2evxx.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rundll.dll

If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself. HOWEVER, boot into safe mode.

After reboot into safe mode don't run anything else until you do the below.

Locate the below with Windows Explorer and delete them (most of them should already be gone but we need to double check)
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\WAUCLT~1.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\ati2evxx.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rundll.dll

Now reboot back into normal mode.

Now follow the directions for Running WinPfind by OldTimer.

    And attach the WinPFind.txt log.

Now attach a new HJT log here in your next message and tell me how the steps went.

Also make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I am pretty sure I remember deleting those two files the first time, and I did not update any software.

I was able to delete everything now, and am attaching the two logs. Everything seems to be working fine, and so far no more pop-ups :)

Thanks again for all your help.

I spoke a little too soon. I just got a pop-up. The frequency is much less than before completing the last steps and I don't think it originated from oinadserver...

You are still infected by one O4 line and also the O20 AppInit_DLL item. These can be problematic to delete. Let's take a different approach.

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\WAUCLT~1.EXE

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tbvoxg] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WAUCLT~1.EXE

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.:

Now please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
    • Double click on Avenger.zip to open the file and extract avenger.exe to your Desktop
    • Copy the below quoted text (which is a script for Avenger) into your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing
      CTRL+C
    • Now, run The Avenger program by double clicking its icon on your Desktop.
    • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
    • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
    • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
    • Click Done
    • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
    • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
The Avenger will automatically do the following:
    • It will Restart your computer. (When the script being executed contains "Drivers to Unload",
The Avenger will actually reboot your system two times.)
    • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
    • After the reboot, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log
file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
    • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped
them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
Please attach the c:\avenger.txt file to your next message.

Also attach a new HJT log.

Ok, did that. So far no pop-ups. I did notice that this file is back in the hjt log. O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aida] "C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\ati2evxx.exe" -vt ndrv

Try fixing that line again using HijackThis and let me know if it comes back.

Also look for the C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\ati2evxx.exe file and tell me if you can find it. You will have to figure out what the DOBE~1 is an abbreviation for. This is a shortened name.

  14. dbloom3

When I searched for the file name it only came up with a file in the prefetch folder which I deleted. I couldn't find a folder starting with DOBE...I fixed it using hjt and it did not come back after rebooting. Still no pop-ups after an hour or so online.

Thanks so much for all of your help. You guys really go above and beyond the call of duty.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link (make sure you update your Sun Java version in step 8).

How to Protect yourself from malware!
