Still infected. Already ran the READ ME and XP cleaning procedure

    My machine appears to be infected by some virus which occassionally redirectes a google search (once every three or four) to either google.analytics or some other sites. I recently completed the README as well as the Win XP cleaning procedure. It doesn't seem like I have this problem at work, although I don't surf the net as much there (could the issue be in my router?).

    The next step in the post instructed me to post my logs here, which I am doing now. Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

    Mark

    PS I will post the log for ComboFix on a subsequent thread. Only can fit four per thread.

    Here is the log from Combo Fix.

    I wonder if my next step should be to "Toggle System Restore."

    You have a DNS infection.

    To begin with, please disable Spybot's TeaTimer.

    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    You should not place ANY site into your TZ.

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\controlset002\services\tcpip\parameters]
    "DhcpNameServer"="1.1.1.1"
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Tell me how things are running now
    . :)

    Hi Kestrel -

    Bad news. I am still having the same issues even after following the steps. In fact, I ran through them twice to ensure I covered everything. Do you have any additional suggestions?

    PS I really appreciate the help.

    Try this way.

    Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Any good or not?

    The fixme.reg was said to be successful. I am attaching the file *MGlogs.zip* to this thread. Hopefully, this cleared the infection. Please let me know if you see anything suspicious in the attachment.

    Thank you for your help.

    It is still there! I shall have a word with one of the others as I cannot see why the last fix did not work.

    Uninstall the below.

    • McAfee Security Scan

    If you use a router then reset it to factory defaults.

    Then boot into safe mode. Then disable ALL protection. Combofix logs still shows active antivirus, all protection should be disabled.
    So, boot into safe mode and disable all protection.

    Then run the fix again as shown below.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.

    "DhcpNameServer"="13.109.66.15 213.109.77.225 1.1.1.1"
    Registry::

    "DhcpNameServer"=""
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\controlset001\services\tcpip\parameters]

    Hi Kestrel -

    Thanks for the additional thoughts. I re-ran the combo fix in safe mode and attached the files to this string. I want to call out a couple thingswhich may help you:
    * I pushed the "reset" button on the back of my Linksys wireless router. Other than that, I'm not certain how to restore factory defaults.
    * I went into LanDesk Antivirus and clicked "disable." I still recv'd a warning that the service was running and I'm not sure what else to do.

    One more thing. I have multiple laptops running at home, although one was added after the virus was detected. Should I perform these procedures on both?

    Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks,

    Mark
