Strange characters

    Toshiba Satellite P105-S6197 with Windows Vista OS. Bought my first PC notebook a few weeks ago. When my wife started it up tonight, the desktop displays strange characters beside the icons instead of the name of the programs; keyboard also types the same weird characters: up and down arrows, boxes, semicircles, etc. Is this a common problem, simple to fix? Or is it a major problem? How can it be fixed without even being able to read the desktop? Thanks.
