Super Computer...I mean Super SLOW computer

I tried uploading my log-file however it said it was an invalid file type...wish I knew how to fix that.

Problem is that my computer has been incredibly slow and jerky. Start up takes over 1 minute, used to be about 30-35 seconds. Shut-down takes 30 seconds plus and it used to shut down in about 15. The most annoying thing of all is that when I have multiple (as few as 3) programs open and minimized in the taskbar when I go to open one of the programs over another one it takes sometimes as much as 30 seconds...soemtimes more to fully load onto the screen...it kinda does it in bits and pieces. So I do not know much about how to fix it. I have run NAV, ADWARE SE, SPYBOT and other resources to no avail in terms of fixing this problem. Any help anyone can offer is very much appreciated! Thank you!!

Below is my log-file, copied and pasted:

You are running Norton Products...that's not helping anything get faster ;)

Could you also post some system hardware specs like CPU, Memory etc

agreed with Solaris, Norton does tend to add many Services to the startup list.

    have you defragged of late?

May also be a wise this to delete the contents of the Pre-Fetch folder C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and reboot.

also for your onw safety update your windows to SP2
run msconfig, go to startup and remover the files that you dont need to start up, if you dont know what files you need or you dont my advice is take everything off but antivirus/firewall, and some really important programs that you use for buisness if any.
that will speed things up a bit

If this is your home computer you may want to turn unecessary features in the Norton stuff off. It looks like you got to many running apps.:)

Other than that I don't see anything strang in there, but I'm not an expert.

If this is for business and you feel you need all of this, then you may wnt to look into hardware upgrades to increase system speed.(ie. more system memory, or processor upgrade that kind of thing)

Although it is most likely a software issue, it's probably not spyware.

the computer is a dell inspiron 8200 with 256 and 30 mb memory. I have not installed sp2 on it, actually when I tried the first time I got some type of error message...I am not sure what to do about that because Dell will not help me with it since it is a third party software issue.

I defrag and clean the disk space once a month.

What is contained in the c:/windows/prefetch file anyway? I will go ahead and delete it and see if that helps at all.

It is a home and business computer actually...NAV is nice to have, however I am not sure what features on it I could do without. Ya' know, I dont want to turn one of the features off and then have my computer crash because it let something by it would not have if I had left it on.

Thanks for all your help. I plan to try to do the SP2 again (anyone know where I can get it?) and also delete the prefetch folder and see about turning off some features of NAV.

    Thanks again!

Unless you use Adobe Acrobat from the get-go, I'd remove it from any start-up it might be in. As far as the NAV goes, like c4.be0 said keep the antivirus/firewall stuff and turn off the rest. I believe a lot of the feature can be turned on and off as needed.:)

Your advice is very vague and generic thread after thread, after thread. Your also linking out for downloads. Please refrain from helping unless you have an answer specific to the problem.

Not sure if anyone asked the question but was it ok before you tried to update to SP2?

    Yes ... earlier in thread.

SP2 can be aquired in a few ways,

    1. Goto windows update, this will only install what you need so cuts down on what you have to download.
    http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us

    2. Download full SP2, the whole SP @ 270mb
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

    3. Order the CD or get it off a compute magazine or friend if they have the cd
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx ( 4-6 weeks approx shipping tho albiet mine came within 10 days.. but you need it sooner tho )

with any of these installs the PC must be clear of spyware and disable or uninstall AV especially Norton, its a good idea to stop or close all none essential programs. You may find you will have to update a few programs as they might need updates to work with SP2, so good idea to check the apps you use and see if you are upto date.
