I started a thread in the Operating System forum (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=59763 ) but I have been told that this forum may be more appropriate for my problem. I have a Windows XP, Service Pack 1 PC that at startup gives me a process named SVCHOST.EXE that utilizes 100 percent of my CPU. Also, I get no taskbar. I have done full virus scans and deep system scans for spyware to no avail. I have a Hijack This log if that would help. That is my last chance since I feel I've tried everything else. My next step is a system rebuild which I would like to avoid if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

    Then run these online scans,

    TrendMicro Online Scan
    Bitdefender online scan
RavAntivirus online scan <-- select Auto Clean then click Scan My PC
    TrojanScan online scan

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

    [IMG] Download HijackThis 1.99.1

[IMG] Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

[IMG] Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

[IMG]Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

[IMG]Run HijackThis and save your log file.

[IMG] Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

I did the TrendMicro online scan on Friday and it came up with nothing. I also did everything else in the sticky thread indicated here and my problem did not go away. The only variant from those instructions was that I did not do the scans in Safe Mode. I was having problems hitting some of the sites indicated while in that mode. I thought it was a PC problem, but over the weekend I read that it was a problem at Comcast, my internet provider. I will try those same steps again in Safe Mode. I don't know how much of a difference that would make.

I was able to resolve my problem last night with a solution from a similar post. It was No Taskbar and svchost swamps CPU . I had to create a registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole\"EnableDCOM" from "N" to "Y".

It was frustrating because according to that post, the solution is on the TrendMicro web site. However, I did numerous online scans using TrendMicro's online scanning tool and not once did it come up with this problem. Any ways, I'm back up and running and I didn't have to rebuild my home PC. Thanks for everybody's help.
