switching back and forth between hard drives?

    i have 2 hard drives on my pc one is mine the other is my kids to play on every time i try to restart to get to my hard drive it starts up with no icons on my desktop and i have to restart again sometimes even 3 times before it will start right. why is this and is there a better way to go about this if so please help?
