System Restore Failed in Win7?

I tried to roll back Windows 7 to a few days ago when I installed a program that gave me an issue and it failed.

The message it gave me was that it could not access a file which was probably being blocked by an anti-virus. I am running BitDefender Total Security 2011. I tried disabling everything within the program and in msconfig to see if System Restore would then work, yet it repeatedly will not. The error code it gives me is 0x800700005.

Any idea what's blocking it?

 

Have you tried running System Restore from safe mode?

 

I had not tried that because I was afraid that Windows would need some files to run restore that would have been disabled in safe mode.

The problem is I can't really run restore at this point as the program that was installed has been configured and I need it now. If I run restore I'll loose that progress.

Any way of knowing this will work for the future. It's just that up till this point I felt good about having System Restored turned on. Now I'm a little worried that if something really bad does happen it will fail the restore again and not be able to roll it back.

FYI, for anyone curious I went ahead and tried it in safe mode and it worked fine.

If you are using Norton or a similar program, tamper protection has to be disabled for system restore to work.

Go to tweaking.com and install the registry backup and restore ptogram.
It is simple and more dependable than system restore.
