I tried to perform a system restore, but the operation failed. I tried another point with the same result. The service is running and the PC went through the usual shut down. Any idea why SR won't work?

What operating system are you using?

If the OS is Windows XP try Googling the exact terms: Microsoft Article 302796 and then choose the first search result which should be: "How to troubleshoot the System Restore tool in Windows XP"

If the OS is Windows Millennium Edition try Googling the exact terms: Microsoft Article 306768 and then choose the first result which should be: "Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows Millennium Edition"

    Good Luck!

    Restore System restore
You may be asked for the Windows XP CD. if you haven't got a retail copy of the XP CD, point your browser to the i386 folder, locate the INF folder and see if you can install System restore form there.

    1/ Open Windows Explorer

2/ on the Main toolbar click Tools

3/ From the drop down menu click Folder Options

4/ The folder Options Properties window will now open

    5/ Click the View tab

6/ In the advanced Settings list scroll down to the Hidden Files and Folders section

7/ Click on the radio button next to the Show Hidden Files and Folders option

8/ Click OK to close the Folder Options Properties window

9/ In the left hand pane of windows explorer click the + sign next to My Computer

10/ This now expands the drive list

11/ Click the + sign next to the C: drive to expand the folder list

12/ From the folder list navigate to the Windows folder and click the + sign next to this to expand the folder list

13/ Scroll down and click on the INF folder

14/ A list of INF files will appear in the right hand pane of Windows explorer

    15/ Look for a file called SR.INF

16/ Once you have located SR.INF Right Click on the folder

17/ From the drop down menu click on Install

18/ System restore should now re-install

19/ If you are asked at any time to insert your Windows XP CD (typically to copy files sr.sys and srframe.mmf) then do so. This enables fresh files to be copied over to your hard drive. Don't try browsing to the Windows directory on your hard drive for the relevant file as all you will be doing is replacing one corrupt file with another

If this works will I be able to do the restore, or will SR just be re-installed with new points from now on.

The only SR.INF is a notepad document with some install and uninstall info.

I clicked on install and inserted the disc, but nothing happens. When I click on OK XP starts to copy from the C drive and even that doesn't complete.

Start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and have the xp disk handy ...

The scannow finished. The XP disc was in the whole time. Would XP have repaired any corrupt files?

Supposed to ....and the inf file should have installed with a right click ....if none of this worked you may need a repair install.

I ran SR again after scannow and the process finished, but the window on startup gave the same could not be restored.

Something is corrupt ...or else you got malware ...check by running a bitscan then if that is ok...do a repair install.

Just tell me how to run a bitscan. AVG and Adaware already found and removed a trojan, i.e., virus buster.

Then you are probably infected in more than one place (including the system restore) ....
Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

Here's the Bitdefender log. It found something that AVG didn't.

If & when your Cleaning out Virus and other Bad stuff you need to Disable/Turn off System Restore Because Bad stuff will hide in System Restore!

I've seen System Restore become corrupt a few times where simply turning off & back on brings it back to life.

I personally dont use SR, IMO a waste of resourses & disk space, seems to fails when you hope to use it or when you think you need it.

AVG isnt a bad Antivirus but I find Avast to be more effective for protection when scanners are set to High:)

Bit scan deleted or moved the nasties, but that doesn't mean the system is clean ....do the read and run first in the malware setion , which includes shutting off system restore.

You seem to want to fix things while you still have malware ...it isn't going to work ..that is what malware does ...makes system inoperable ...finish the malware thread that you started.
