How long have you found System Restore to take?
Is leaving it to run over night ever the done thing? It's currently taking well over two hours here. I'm just wondering - maybe my machine's buggered.

At worst, I have seen it take 45 minutes. Never overnight, or two hours though. Guess it depends on the amount of changes and machine spec.

My wife's old workstation might have taken that long though. It was a P4, with 2GB of ram (shared with video) and Windows XP.

My last system restore took just under 2 hours......... in 1995. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that your system is broken, it may just be outdated. If you get it restored you should do some benchmarking and see how it performs under present day work loads. There's a whole section devoted to benchmarking apps on this site at:

I've had it take over an hour on a few systems I have worked on. The longest were older systems.

I generally do system restore from a command prompt, which seems to cut down on problems if not time.
