Thank you in advance Geeks, you're all tremendous people. My computer has developed a bad case of the System Security bug over the past day/day and a half. I woke up this morning to find a new desktop wallpaper, constant pop-ups, etc. Firefox would not open, and Google searches in IE were being redirected. My initial attempts to get to the add/remove program menu or even the task manager were blocked, and whenever I tried to access SAS, Malware, etc. I would get a caution window saying that particular .exe was infected. So no dice.

I booted up into safe mode and was able to delete a couple of System Security folders I'd found in "documents and settings\all users\application data\" and after that I was able to access what I needed in normal mode. I ran as much of the READ ME FIRST stuff as I could, though Malware Bytes was never able to progress beyond about 2 minutes of scanning (I think that it was shutting down as soon as it began to sweep through the docs and settings folder). I can't recall if it was MGTools or Combofix that found the SKYNET rootkit, but whichever program it was asked me to write down the following 5 entries:

    system32\drivers\SKYNETmxdupqlx.sys
    32\SKYNETmrlrdlvm.dll
    32\SKYNETpxurrikv.dat
    32\SKYNEToryqgkxy.dll
    32\SKYNETtkkkmsrf.dat

Anyway, everything other than the MB log is attached. Things seem pretty stable now (and I do have my wallpaper back), but without being able to complete that Malware scan, I figured it was best to come to you.

    Thank you,
    j

Your out of date with SAS:

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is out.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

You're also out of date with MGTools and when you are kitted out with the current version we might be able to get round the MBAM problem:

Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    With regards to MBAM:

Go to the C:\MGtools folder and locate the RunMB.bat file and double click on it to run it. This will attempt to make a renamed copy of the Malwarebytes program (named mgmb.exe) and then it will attempt to run this re-named version. If this runs, it will try to perform a QuickScan. Allow it to finish, then fix all the malware it finds. Then save the log. Attach this log if it does run.

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions, attach all the logs I need and also let me know how things are running now.

    Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in responding; I was away from the comp for a week. I updated both SAS and Malware Bytes, and I've been able to get logs for everything. Things are still running smoothly, even if a bit slowly. In any case, both SAS and Malware found and killed some infected files.

    Logs attached; thanks!

Why are you using this machine without being protected by anti-virus? You need to install some as soon as possible. A list of our reccommended will be in the "How to protect yourself from malware" link which will be in my final steps.

    1. Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following softwares:

    • Ad-Aware <--- Ad-Aware is not as effective as SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes that we had you install. So we suggest that you uninstall Ad-Aware (unless you purchased it) to avoid wasting any system resources on it.
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 11 <--- out of date
    • Spyware Doctor 5.5 <--- if this is just a free trial that is useless & won't fix anything then please uninstall it, unless you paid for it.
    • Internet Explorer Default Page <--- It is advised that you uninstall this program from your computer. If this program gave you the option to not install the malware or adware during setup, and you chose that option, then it should be safe to leave the program installed.

    2. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix .

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
(make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    CMDIDEE

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\CMDIDEE.sys
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\91294206.ini

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. Also delete all files in the below bold folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

And also delete these temp files from Microsoft Word from your desktop:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Bruce\Desktop\~WRL0001.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Bruce\Desktop\~WRL0857.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Bruce\Desktop\~WRL1665.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Bruce\Desktop\~WRL3494.tmp

    5. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix

    7. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

OK; I ran through your instructions. The only thing that gave me trouble was finding IE Default Page in the Add/Remove menu...It didn't show up there, so I wasn't able to delete it. Otherwise, everything else went smoothly, and my computer is still running normally. Logs attached.

    Thanks,

    Your logs are clean! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
