Tabs Missing Under Display Properties

Last week I had a nice assortment of virus's and trojan's and hijacker's on my machine but I was able to get it all cleaned up by using the programs on this site. (As far as I know) I already used Spybot, Adaware SE and I run Norton's Antivirus. The problem is whatever got a hold of my machine deleted all the tabs under display properties except settings and screensaver. I can no longer use wallpaper so I have no choice for a desktop. I also have a small message in the middle of my desktop that says "Warning! Your computer is infected! Everything else seems to be back to normal since cleaning my computer and the programs I used to get rid of the other crap are not finding anything new. I have a Gateway laptop (out of warranty) running XP Pro. Any suggestions about what to do next?

 

Sounds like you may still have some nasties floating around in there. Moving this over to Spyware forum....If you have not - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal please do so now. Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

If you have completed ALL of these steps then please move on to providing the requested information and completing the steps below.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.


After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

 

I ran all the scans and downloaded all tools on the readme 1st page with the exception of Symantecs online virus scan. I was able to do the security check and it said everything was okay. I ran all of the detection tools in Safe Mode with the exception of the online scans because in safe mode with networking enabled I could not connect to the internet. My desktop tab is back after running all the scans and I was able to change my wallpaper so the virus message in the middle of my desktop is gone, but I still have a irritating problem that may or may not be related to the trojans and virus's. I have a program that I tried to install at one time that failed but it shows up in my list of programs under control panel, add or remove programs. There is no uninstall button there so I cannot uninstall it. The windows installer pops up and this program trys to reinstall itself everytime I launch CC Cleaner or Counter Spy. When this happens, Counter spy pops up and asks me if I want to allow a program to change my default user or shell folder which I am very concerned about. I tell it no and after I go through this twice it closes until I run one of these programs again. The name of this program is Easy CD Creator 5 Basic. This seems to be the only problem I have right now but I am attaching the HJT file in case that would help you tell me what is going on with it. Thank you for your help. I do appreciate it.
