My boss asked me clean his computer of malware. His teenaged son had used it with predictable results. I did the following:

    • Successfully ran CCleaner ("Analyze" and "Run Cleaner").
    • Successfully ran Spybot Search and Destroy in SafeMode.
    • Successfully ran CounterSpy in Safe Mode.
    • Successfully ran Bitdefender's online scanner in Safe Mode with Network Support.
    • Successfully ran Panda's online scanner (paid version) in Safe Mode with Network Support.
    • Successfully ran the ShowNew and GetRunKeys scripts.
    • Successfully ran HijackThis under the name Analyse (system scan and save log file).

Attached are some of the relevant logs, the rest are in a subsequent post.

Here are the rest of the logs. I forgot to get the CounterSpy log of the infected computer before posting this. If you need it, I can get it for you after the weekend. Sorry about that.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Continue by downloading a tool we will need - Pocket KillBox

Save it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ThemeManager - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jt4q07h5e.dll (file missing)

NOTE: HJT will popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
    • select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    • Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
    • Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\.jpi_cache\jar\1.0\arc.zip-53b4229a-210a0333.zip
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\WinAdServX.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\alchem.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\inf\biini.inf
    C:\WINDOWS\kwv2.dat
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\exclean.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\TargetSoftSetup.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vx0.nls
    C:\WINDOWS\unstall.exe
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I uninstalled the old Java runtime and Viewpoint Media Player.

I did the HJT fix, the reg key merge, and the Pocket Killbox fix. I did NOT get a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt.

This is not my computer and I cannot really test how things are working now. The complaint that brought the computer to me was very slow e-mail. I need to have the owner test that.

New logs are attached. Thanks for your assistance.

I'm not sure what that would really mean.

    The logs are clean now.

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software
