Is there a way to test this new Coolmax 450w psu I just got today, without having to hook it up to any parts or the case (none of which I have yet >_>)? I'd like to know if it actually works before it's too late to return it to newegg.

You can go buy a multimeter for less than $20 at Fry's to test the powersupply.

I keep an old beat up motherboard and a junk drive around just for that purpose (as a load). You don't need to have them in a case, just hook up the power supply plugs to the appropriate MB and HD connectors. Then short the two pins (PWR ON) on the MB that would normally be connected to the front panel power on button. If you have a multimeter, you can check the voltages.

You can test the supply without a load. Simply jump the green wire (PS-ON) and any adjacent black wire (COM) from the 20/24-pin main connector. You should hear the power supply fan spin up. Again, use a multimeter to check the voltages.

I don't know the truth of this situation -- but I've seen it said that (some?) switching power supplies (like those in a desktop computer) won't operate without a load -- they'll turn themselves off to avoid damaging themselves when power is applied.

You might want to check that with the manufacturer of the power supply.
