lol thats great. 23 Awards to a program that just nothing.

I kind of first thought this site was kind of bad like some of the other download site cause of the advertising adverts when my friend recommend this site and a download manager for me to download from this site a few years ago.

Didn't have any problems with any of it in fact and it even helped when my dads computer got infected and i believe it is no longer infected after following the help on this site, thanks.

Thread reopened, please stay on track.

So, downloaded a asterisk password recovery program from one of those VERY big well known "certified clean" button happy sites today and sure enough Nortons flagged Infostealer meaning most likely this program is claiming to uncover passwords for you but is in fact stealing your passwords. Wondered why I had never heard of it, and it was not a new program. I installed some other asterisk uncover programs form Majorgeeks this was not a false positive. It was not. Be careful out there.

I guess if you hire cheap labor to add 20 files an hour, some slip by. 100% clean. LOL.

Btw, I've rated MajorGeeks as high, not just because you're all cool dudes and dudettes, but also because you've helped me so much.

Appreciate that, I do like WOT as well, what is needed is moderation of peoples comments, especially when they border on slandering a websites reputation. That is the problem with SiteAdvisor, a handful of really, really uninformed people are allowed to slander you and they do nothing about it.

Been a gamer since i was born really. I've known about MG since i could download my first patch. I used to sporadically use it for lots of different downloads and always found it right on the money, and relatively fast.

Just recently was smart enough to actually USE the forums for my problems as my idiot "friends" at my gaming guild do nothing but critique and sometimes half *** an answer.

Ive gotten more help in 2 forum posts here, than in the 5 years ive been a member of their clan from other supposed pc "guru's".

You guys rock here and will probably be seeing more of me since i woke up finally LOL

I am wondering about some other free download sites I have used: Tucows, NoNags, and File Hippo. File Hippo has seemed very reliable to me.

I needed this info. I did notice SiteAdvisor was inconistent & questionable at times. But did not realize that Softpedia & Download.com were so badly reputed. I have used them a lot! Though I was aware that members/poster that gave reviews, well no way to know who they really are or who they may work for.

I have also used Tucows and they seemed ok. Really I have relied on trusted online communities. Have to remember to check here @ MajorGeeks more often.

Problem is, and always will be, bulk. They are trying to do it all with low payed employees. A lot fo these guys rate things higher then they should be and often are just downright wrong in their assesment. We deal in quality and hand pick everything and we can't even be perfect at it. Tucows is ok, just slow now. FileHippo is trustworthy so far, but they really only add maybe 5 files a day. They generate traffic from their programs like CCleaner. Smart really. I worked for Cnet, I have been there. I talked to Softpedia when he went from SoftNews.ru to Softpedia.com. I know lots of nice people at both places, but they are what they are. A lot of quality gets lost the day you dump everything off on employees at a fairly lousy hourly rate. I can call a spade a spade, it's al the same to me, I think we are a very niche website and frankly we do what we do best. If any of you has worked for a company with hundreds of employees, you know what I am talking about.

Never heard of them, sorry. Looks like a generic file listing websites. Takes many man hours to add every file released, so typically I try to use some common sense with that type of site, ie trust no one :)

To be honest, I don't see what all this fuss is about. You want a piece of software to do a job. You go to a site where there's lots of downloads to choose from. You download/test for viruses/try out pieces of software until you find one that works for you. It mightn't look complicated or involved enough to get anything but scorn from other users, but it works for you. Then you use it. The ADVANTAGE of Softpedia and Download.com is they've got loads to choose from. MG are virtually saying 'You Will Use What We Want You To, Or Else...!'

Shouldn't someone, in all this festival of butt-kissery, be asking (a) WHY MG are so determined we should use these particular pieces of software - the only reason we think they're best for the job's because MG have told us so and (b) WHY they don't want us to access the sheer variety of software the other sites offer? Whether it's 'good' or 'bad' is for the individual user to determine. What works fine for me might not be satisfactory for someone else, who has differing expectations. It doesn't mean the software is bad per se. And if it is bad, why grumble about it? Uninstall it and try something else. It's just like going to a shop and trying on clothes.

MG's a good site to get help at. The problem with it as a download site is that, in a mild way, it's trying to do an Apple/Steve Jobs. 'You WILL use only the software I tell you to use....' Why is it doing this? To keep you coming back here. They want to bind your traffic to this site. If they can get your confidence, they will also get your traffic. Like I said, it's the Steve Jobs trick on a smaller scale.

Softpedia, Tucows, Download.com et al - Vive La Variety (never could do French!)

Calm down! For people like me with not only a limited knowledge on software and apps available on the net but their veracity as well, MG's is a haven for downloads. On the other hand nobody is forcing anyone to use only MG's but for me it's sound advive:)
Fair enough, but crapwear may have already done it's damage and further more may not uninstall clean and continue to create issues.

Is it really that simple always?

For crying out loud!! You make some strange comparissions :-D Again, like I said, one is free free to go any where. All it takes is a click of the mouse:)

Hope your BSOD issues in software forums is a simple fix:)

    Cheers..

This i find to be a very strange comparison?

First and foremost this site was developed by MA and CP as a free help forum for those who have less knowledge about the workings of a PC and it's support team give their time and expertise freely for the betterment of us less informed members.

As with any website there are running costs for the servers and such which have to be met and this is done by promoting third party software (some free and some paid) plus some advertising which you are able to choose to look at or not,it is not forced down your throat like many other forums.

The proof of how good this site is there for all to see with the number of MSVPs we have on board.

Steve Jobs is just a financial machine who is only interested in the bottom line so you are not comparing like with like.

As final comment, all members are free to peruse the site or go elsewhere if they want to but so many remain, is that not another testament to the quality of the site?

Major Geeks already supplied valid reasons not to trust some of these sites. I guess the reasons were not good enough or not read. But I have met many a victim of people who claim to know about computers & computer programs and came away with a mess instead of a resolved issue. And so many sites are not clean from viruses, trogjens, etc. I sure want to avoid these.

Oh my! Just clicked on this thread while waiting (never long!) for the excellent help of MG's brass. ;) Just my 2 cents on this issue, as a low-end buck private:

If you're a user ... and if you're lost, if you're wondering, if your system is all SNAFU'd ... imho, MG is the ONLY place to go and be sure, truly sure, that you're getting fixed, truly fixed, by people who do truly know THE score.

I've been a user on this site for years, even before my current login, and the MG folks have *never* failed to help me sort out the issues. I have tried other sites, and really, I return here because I can trust the answers!

Even 14 billion years ago, when I was reading PC World and half a dozen other pubs, working for Big Blue (so not-so-Steve-Jobs ;)), and had some kind of clue myself on software and OS's, I quickly discovered that I didn't have the knowledge or discernment to "know better" in the way these folks do.

So ... people are bound to this site because they keep getting solutions that work? Hooray! That means there are that many fewer afflicted, infected rigs out there trying to interact with mine! :-D

Rock on, Major Geeks! Sending the Big Love from this Loyal User. :heart:heart:heart

I love this site because you can come here to ASK for advice, and when it is offered, you can try it or not. No one makes you do anything, or makes you download anything. If you go to a site for help, you can't then crab they are "forcing" anything on you - YOU came to THEM. I so appreciate all I learn here, years ago and now, because it helps me stay alert to possible dangers and trouble on the web. It helps me tweak and play with settings without getting into deep doodoo with a bad change. Stay here, stay committed, and stay safe.

I would start a new thread on what help you need and give as much info as possible, but we can guide you in whats needed, once we know your issue. Just pick the forum area that covers your issue the closest, but dont worry as I will move it to the right place if its not in it already.
