I've been using the free version of Avira's AntiVir for years and never had any issues with it causing any lag in WinXP, Vista, or Win7. The older versions caused SERIOUS lag in Win2000, but not with newer OS'es. The full (paid) version of MalwareBytes also has excellent protection and is light on resources. I run both Avira and MBAM on my home PC with Win7 X64 and it's really fast, no lag at all.

Both Avira and Avast are good for gaming. :) Avast for Win7 has a "gaming mode" that turns off pop-up alerts for as long as you have it on, so you can do full-screen games without issues.

I have heard good things about eset NOD32, does anyone else have an opinion of it? I am thinking of switching to it after my Norton subscription runs out.

ok im trying avast now did a scan and i have 2 high risk entrys they are a paging file on my second hard drive which has windows 7 on it (but i cant get it to work or load without freezing) and a system volume restore on the main hard drive as well

i moved the system volume restore to chest for now until i know what to do with it and the paging file is to big for the chest

so im wondering what to do with these files and could i delete the paging file on the second hard drive

The paging file is probably labeled as "high risk" because it cannot be scanned; most AV programs cannot open and scan the paging file, and by all means, DO NOT MOVE THE PAGING FILE!!! Doing so will likely cripple the OS on that drive!!! The system restore volume is somewhat of a risk- many viruses like to jump into this volume so that even if you successfully remove the virus, if you ever perform a system restore, the virus will be revived. The best way to handle this is to boot to the drive with the infected system restore volume, and purge (or empty) the system restore cache. In XP, you'd right click My Computer, click Properties, click System Restore, then turn off System Restore on all drives. Reboot, then turn System Restore on again. In Windows 7, right click Computer, select Properties, select System Protection over in the left column, click the Configure button and you will then be able to delete all restore points and any infections inside these points. Restart the PC and re-enable System Restore by creating a new restore point.

Avast, while outstanding in all ways, is indeed the king of false positives...

LOL roflmao Too true! It's the false positives and the freekin' voice telling me "The database has been updated" that have kept me from using Avast full time. If they included an option to turn off that @#$%^&*#%$^@ voice then I might be able to live with the false positives....

    They do. :p

I'm on my Linux laptop right now, so I don't have it installed to go look for it, but it's in the Advanced Options somewhere.

I lost the edit button. :(

I went to my Windows Pc and looked. Go to Settings and then to Sounds, and you can turn them off there.
