Wish I had seen this before I moved from XP to Windows 7.

    From the MG store, today.

My note, never upgrade, always do a clean install. Upgrades invariably cause problems, often not immediately apparent and not easy to remedy.

I agree with earthling, I would do a clean install then you know you would have a clean system it won't have any files present from windows xp.

We tried using laplink at our SWM (solid waste management) center. It didn't do a very good job. So, we just went to the typical, way of upgrading, and haven't used the software again.

I have upgraded Win 95 to 98, to 2000, to XP - never had any problems.

Win 7 came with my new machine, so I wasn't tempted to upgrade.

I also upgraded XP to Windows 7 Ultimate the old fashioned manual way.
Laplink's blurb seemed convincing to try, and being listed on the MG store, I posted it here.

I probably would have tried it but I was not aware of the Software at the time. I remember back to Laplink cables from "ye olde" days, ;) saving lots of effort way back then. :-D

    Thanks for your experience, theefool.:major

Three notes for three different crowds:

For the non-tech savvy, check out the Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 step-by-step guide on Microsoft.com for help backing up files and using Windows Easy Transfer your files and settings to your new Windows 7 environment.

For the tech-savvy and for IT professionals installing Windows 7 on individual computers the User State Migration Tool command line utility will copy a user profile, that is data and settings for a user, to a migration store using scanstate.exe and load that user profile into the new Windows 7 environment using loadstate.exe. Better yet, you can use the /hardlink option to create the migration store locally on the computer, install Windows 7, and load the user profile right from the hard drive. Check out PC Refresh Scenarios Two and Three for hardlink migration in the TechNet article on Common Migration Scenarios.

Lastly, for IT professionals managing a deployment of Windows 7 to multiple systems the ultimate set of tools is the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT). To see just what MDT can do, check out this great video from Microsoft TechEd where MDT is used to deploy Windows 7 to a Windows XP computer and to capture the Windows XP environment to a virtual machine for future access.

Check out MDT and the latest Microsoft deployment tools and technologies at the Pilot and Deploy page on the Springboard Site on TechNet, hardlink migration is even this month’s spotlight!

Ooh, another drive-by post from the MS Outreach Team.:-D Let us know if this helped you any bigbazza, they don't have a good track record from the posts I've seen previously, here and elsewhere.

I am afraid that my above post was made while stationary and in fact from within a building, not a vehicle.

I am not unfamiliar with the discussions of “Windows Outreach” here on Major Geeks previously. Since I don’t want to hijack this thread to talk all about myself and what “Windows Outreach” is, let me post a “Hey, hello!” thread in the Welcome Center where you are free to ask me any questions and poke away at my authenticity.

At the very least I hope that knowing the Windows Easy Transfer application exists is helpful to some. You’ll still need to reinstall applications, but data and settings are preserved. If you’re comfortable with CLI, USMT lets you avoid the external storage device with hardlink migration, and if you’re performing this task on multiple computers, want some advice, and stumble upon this thread, MDT automates the process and is the Microsoft recommended tool for Windows 7 deployment. It might not be beneficial to the OP, but it might help someone else reading the thread.

Absolutely it may help others, no question about that but this thread will die sooner or later and your excellent post will become a waste of your time unless it was canned. I've seen you around at a site that I mod for and we were scratching our heads to find out who you were and finally vetted the team after several days. You must realize the skepticism that people have when you're not properly introduced. Anyways, I recognize the writing style.;) /end hijack

My problem is that I am still new to learn the ins and outs of OS and how to tweak them. Even though my OS is now running faster with less hassles than ever before, I did have to do several reinstalls before I learned how to not kill things so to speak. How does that work when you have to do a reinstall? Does just the upgrade disk work as well as the full in these situations?

Thanks augiedoggie. I've saved the OP's links and will check them out if anyone else I know wants to go from XP to W7. All too late for me, though. :cry
