After trying a clean install of Win10, which took several attempts using a usb stick with an iso installation download, the installation froze at the point of setting up the internet connection.

After many restarts and reading in the internet and not finding anything about this, it turned out that switching the wireless mouse out for one with a cable solved the problem. The wireless probably needed a driver and without it, it wasn't possible to proceed with the installation beyond this point.

This was on an Acer notebook.

My two Dell laptops had none of these issues. I use RF mice with the dongle plugged into one of the USB ports. If yours is a Bluetooth mouse, then, yes the Bluetooth driver is needed because Bluetooth doesn't activate until after Windows launches.

Right, and you can't install the Bluetooth driver without a mouse.

A second issue which remains unresolved for an Acer is that Acer doesn't support Win 10 in some of the even recent notebooks, so there seems to be some issues with being able to use the touchpad. No solution for that one yet.

    Couldn't you use the touchpad?

No. It quit working after the Win10 installation.
