To Dep Or Not To Dep... Eh? Malfunction On Xp

    DEP processing is flaky (lately..something changed, somewhere). Setting /noexecute=OptOut and adding HP digital monitor to the exceptions list does not cause DEP enable for all processes.

    No 'restart needed' popup is displayed after adding items to the ignore list...

    ?? CHROME, AVAST, FIREFOX all show DEP (permanent). All others DISABLED.....

    ?? setting /noexecute=AlwaysOn works, all processes DEP'd, BUT disallows HP digital monitor (can print, cannot scan or retrieve printer info).

    I do have Administrator privileges but thought I noticed a popup (IIRC) re two items (processes?) not functioning, CIMV2? perhaps and one other (but memory fades). WBEMTEST checked for DEP 3 (OptOut), verified it was set (I forget the Superclass now, under root/cimv2).

    Is this a Startup issue of some kind? Something not loading? GPEDIT under XP not helpful unless DISabling access to various options, at least on XP.

    Thanks.... :-/

    PS let me know if DEP actually is an issue or is it all just in my cranium?

    Hey, David, thanks for responding...but I think there's a miscommumication, oops.
    Boot.ini looks like:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=99
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /bootlog /noexecute=OptOut

    so according to Microlimp, OptOut means DEP is ENABLEd for -all- processes exCEPT those I specify;
    I should see that result in Process Explorer (PROCEXP), but I don't, only AVAST and FIREFOX are DEP'd.
    Strange, no? Unless the parm is hosed or something's intercepting boot processing somewhere. AFAIK,
    the parm is "noexecute", is Not case-sensitive but the value OptOut is. Maybe.

    Again, /noexecute=AlwaysOn works fine but inhbits HP Digital Image Monitor, which prevents scanning or
    getting printer info e.g. ink levels and performing maintenance tasks.

    It's screwy! So please re-read my post. The last fellow posting to your article coudn't set anything
    because noexecute was prolly set to AlwaysOn which, IIRC, what happened when I did that.

    BTW the boot log doesn't tell me much of anything.

    thanks!

    OH, the only other thing I can think of is the OptIn option, which would presumably mean I'd have to specify Every process to be DEP'd. That make sense??
