Tomato on WRT54GL Install/Setup Questions

Anyone here who has experience with Tomato 1.19 on WRT54GL ???

I followed the wiki page for Tomato as far as I could but there's a glich somewhere. I unpacked the downloaded Tomato archive, it went smoothly, I opened the WRT admin applet, went to the upgrade tab, selected the proper .bin file and hit the button. When I did, IE7's page changedover to a blank... it was responding apparently to the router telling it to put up a page out of its own store [something like 192.168.1.1/upgrade. ] it was blank..
I waited several minutes, as the Tomato faq says, logged back into the router and it was unchanged. ???

So here I sit. What went wrong?? is there a step left out of the Tomato instructions?
