Dear Geeks - I have done most of your recommendations trying to get rid of a virus that changes my homepage to topsecuritysite DOT com/ and continually sends me virus warnings and popups eg. "Error Safe" "Adpunisher" "your computer is infected! System detected virus activities" "Your system has critical errors, click here to fix them" type messages. I have run Spybot and Ad-Aware SE. One of the offending programs (not picked up by either of these two) seems to be something called 'Ultimate Defender' which when I try to use Add/remove programs, it won't let me remove it. I have run a 'Hijack this' scan and can send you the notepad file if this will help. It's just hard to know what to trust when the virus is telling me it will save me from viruses! I have never had a virus before - my techie dad advised me to try Hijack This.
    Please help if you can.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!:)

Please do not post click-able links to anything that has infected your computer. To do so you are increasing the likelihood of spreading the infection to anyone who inadvertently clicks the link.

HijackThis is not a malware removal tool it is simply a tool that may or may not help identify some of the things that are infecting your computer and it then has the ability to remove those registry entries. It is used as a final step as it does not show everything.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
      • Bitdefender
      • Panda Scan
      • HijackThis
