A torrent is a way of distributing files.

You download the torrent, which contains information on the file and where the rest can be downloaded from.

The torrent is only very small. Once that's downloaded, you then use a Bit Torrent Client to download the rest.

Azureus is about the best, but some P2P applications like ShareAzza also support it.

All you need to do is double-click on the Torrent file and it will do the rest.

The file is downloaded in pieces from many different users, and isn't stored in one central location.
