Toshiba DVD/VCR wont record on RW

Hi All

When I was gainfully employed I invested in a Toshiba D-VR35SB DVD/VCR Recorder. Plays VCR's and DVD (- Format ) fine and will record on VCR. I have recently decided to start using DVD RW's as my tapes are getting worn. I bought the verbatim disc 4X but as soon as I insert them, up pops a box asking me if I would like to initialize the disc. If I say no it automatically rejects the discs If I say yes a bar gives me the % done and the a message saying "You could not format the disc because of error detection " When you press OK it then rejects the disc. Toshiba customer service were useless. Any ideas ? Someone suggested using 2X discs, would this make a difference ?

Then it appears as if it can use DVD-RW disks not DVD+RW disks.
