Well, I'm new here and better say " Hello " first!!
My girlfriend dropped her thermos on her laptop (see above) last week and wound up with a black screen and the dreaded "Check cable connection!" PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected device"
So I went into DOS Setup Utility.
Went to "BOOT" and 1.HDD?SSD showed NO harddrive.
Waited patently for a new online purchased harddrive (a little smaller then original...500gb) to arrive and installed it today.
Now the Utility is showing that it recognizes it.
Tried to to use the Toshiba Restore disc we burned upon purchase and also the three cd System discs with zero results.
Went back into the laptop, removed the bottom and checked all connections and cleaned contacts at harddrive, cmos bat., Cd etc.
Entered the Utility again and see:
    1. HDD/SSD WDC WD5000BPUT
    2. USB Blank
    3.ODD MatshitaDVD-Ram
    4.LAN Atheros Boot Agent
All of the data on the old harddrive has been saved so we agree to just try to restore this puppy back to factory specs on the new harddrive but obviously it appears more troublesome than just popping in the new unit.
Of course this laptop is out of warrenty and being on a limited budget I hate to tell her to continue throwing more money into it, motherboard...cd reader...etc.
I've read several (hours and hours) threads and suggestions on downloading software utilities but dang nab it my writing ability to the cd on my laptop is out (IT STILL READS...JUST WON'T WRITE) so where do I start.....

Greetings, mendoAu, and welcome to MajorGeeks.

Nice first post - very informative. Thank you.

This might turn out to be a tough one without the ability to burn bootable disks. If you reorder your start menu to ODD MatshitaDVD-Ram first can you boot to any of the Toshiba disks?

Be patient - I'm sure other MGs will jump in with suggestions.

    Thanks caliban,
Nope...even set as first boot the cd won't read....just stays with the "reboot and...." screen.
One thing I should mention is that we never had to try to use the recover discs we burned but I can tell that they contain info by observation. I do have a restore disc for my older Toshiba that at this point I would be willing to try if it wouldn't screw things up even worse.
Is there something I'm missing after the harddrive replacement other than having the restore disc in when powering on?

Greetings mendoAu I had the same problem with a Toshiba C650
I could not use the toshiba recovery disk
I had to use a Windows 7 disk and use( repair this computer )
I ran it four times before reconized the hard drive

Step 1 turn on computer put disk in
step 2 F2 or F12 boot from CD
step 3 windows will load files (wait) the next screen will have at the bottom
left corner 3 options click (repair this computer) follw instructions from there

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestion....just don't have a windows 7 disk. Just kinda wish for the old days when computers came with the windows platform disk. I'll make a few phone calls to friends to borrow a copy....
Like I mentioned before I have a restore disk for "my" older Toshiba with XP on it..could it work????

    Good afternoon.

Boot to that disk and see if it has a System Repair option - if so, then you might be able to try a couple of things. Shouldn't hurt.

Does your XP disk have all version like XP Home and XP pro
If yes it does have the recovery feature

Well, I once again decided to tackle this dang Toshiba.

My girlfriend has kinda decided to find another one (used on e-bay probably)

I loaded my Tosiba L25 restore ( with xp) disk in and got further than before but came to a couple of deadends. Get to windows setup and get:
Check for virues remove any newly installed harddrives Run CHKDSK /F
But don't know how to prompt to do that.
    Also reboot and get:
Setup could not determine type of mass storage device. Setup will load: <none
*specity device support disk PRESS S
*If do not have PRESS ENTER
When I pick and press S Display reads Could not find floppy drive.

With a smile on my face and realizing I have not seen a floppy drive since windows 95 I have once again stored this puppy in the cupboard again. Perhaps I will continue in my pursuit of an up to date copy of windows 7.
Just a question...do any of you think for the price this might help:

    Thanks for any advice..........
