Hey, just was browsing thru the posts and got an idea...

How about a toys download category?

    Just neat stuff, the misc. section has too much practicality... :}

like fractal progs, gimp, astronomical progs, just neat stuff that is really only meant for fun. gimp has uses, I know, but making crazy ass pictures is a definite "toy" use.

    what say?

    what's a geek w'out some cool ass toys? :]

Tough to do, opens a can of worms, silly companies already submit stupid porn games and screensavers as it is.

Riddle me this. Elaborate more, I like the idea, I think it can fit in here and we would like to expand, but I dont think I am following you 100%

Oh, I am like a little Bill Gates, once I like your idea, I will steal it, delete this thread and say it was my idea. ;)

Bit busy tommorow, but will try and check for a reply in the AM.

    http://www.fractovia.org/uberto/ - fractals

    http://www.gimp.org/ - paint like program

    http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/~cs423/423spring04/Team2/ - paint like

    http://www.eclectasy.com/Iterations-et-Flarium24/gallery-atr-02/index.htm - fractal gallery that's cool

    http://www.mpeters.de/mpeweb/hop/download/download.htm - fractal prog

    http://www.davidpaulgreen.com/oolog.html - astronomy software

    http://www.fourmilab.ch/homeplanet/homeplanet.html - astronomy

I don't know, just TOYS@! I'm sure if you made a thread it would fill up quickly with peoples favs...

computer graphics, fractal progs, photo/paint creating/altering software, astronomy( I think these will be better as more computing power becomes available, ie better graphics)

Just stuff you can play with...create stuff with, do art with, etc. not necessarily computer games, more art/creative oriented... there's probably lots of things I don't even know about that would fall under this category...
also mabye a rating system for all downloads, might be good. people are always asking what's your favorite(blank)...

And to answer the question what is a geek w/out some cool ass toys?
a geek that is much too productive!

    :]

edit: Muuuuuuuusic making programs! the freer the better! I really want a program to edit music with...

Hey I'll check out those fractal programs as I love that sort of stuff. And I suggest you check out Fractal eXtreme if you're not already familiar with it. While it's commercial software you can download an almost fully functional free trial version. The only limitation on the free version is that your limited to a zoom level of 40 I think (which I believe means 2 to the 40th power!) so you can still do a heck of a lot of exploring in, for example, the Mandelbrot Set (Julia sets and other fractals are also supported by Fractal eXtreme). And one of the neatest features of the program (besides it's amazing speed -- it's virtually real time until you've zoomed in quite a ways) is that you can easily create wonderful fractal zoom movies that are a real trip. Color cycling, a create your own color pallete tool and lots of other great fractal drawing tools and features also are included. As you may have guessed, I really like this program and paid for the full version (which supports zooming up to 1000 levels -- 2 to the power of 1000 that is!), but I have no financial interest in the company -- just think Fractal eXtreme is really amazing fractal software so I suggest if you do start a toys page Major, you consider a link to the free download of Fractal eXtreme. The link to the homepage is:

    http://www.cygnus-software.com/

Look over on the top left of the page above to find the free download link.

They also have a free fractal movie viewer that allows you to view fractal movies and share them with friends who don't have the program installed. It's just a freeware movie viewer for Fractal eXtreme movie files and doesn't allow you to generate fractal images or movies though. And there are free Fractal eXtreme movies for download on the cygnus website above also.

And, if you do start a toy page Major, you might also consider including Steve Gibson's free Wizmo program at:

    http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

Wizmo also includes a number of handy useful Windows utilities, but I mention it in connection with toys because it includes his Graviton program which can be run at will or set up as a screen saver with user chosen parameters. Steve Gibson is, as you probably know, the creator of SpinRite and perhaps Major Geeks already has a link to Wizmo on one of the utility download pages anyway? Even so, it might be worth putting on a toys page too because of the Graviton feature which is clearly a toy.

Great idea beanier! Hope the Major thinks so too. You can never be too rich, too thin or have too many software toys! *L*

I'd "play" with one of these "toys"

    TOYS!!!!! :]

    sweet....

Does anybody know of a music editing/making software? free, if possible, or if not, really cheap? It doesn't matter how basic, I think I read somewhere that you could buy a game on x-box or something like that that let you sample beats, etc. thanks

another idea is perhaps have a section for free little games that can be downloaded with no adware or spyware. Little arcade games that are free to download or something. I would really love that.

    Hi,
Couple things. First and foremost, I have started the toys section. If you have something to add, please add it here.

    Neo,
Games will never, ever be here. Whole different audience and does not apply to the theme, no matter how we look at it. THAT said, I do have a gaming site in the works and it is probably a couple months out and we will cover smaller games, though it also has a theme like any site we play. I think you will dig it and we will let you know. Its strictly a side project we think will be fun.

Oh yeah, in discussions (things move slowly with the 2 of us) is a multimedia or imaging section. Imaging would include paint and imaging programs like the ones you suggested.

like graphic imaging? artwork type stuff?

What would the multimedia section have?

This seems REAL cool... I really like the idea of artwork, music mixing, etc... tools as much as toys.

Stuff that you can use for your digital camera or paint, for example. Paint Shop Pro, Picassa, Paint.net (that you mentioned) and the like. Multimedia is a bit further out there, but audio editing tools. Gotta stick to the utility theme :)

MA, for the toys section perhaps you could add World Wind. http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/ Its a great program made by nasa thats free and you can use it to view satalitte pictures in a 3d form around the world.

what do you mean utility? I thought the toys section would be cool because there would be no utility, just to have fun. Or if you prefer, toys are something UTILIZED for the purpose of enjoying oneself. Therefore they are a utility. :D

Whoops, never mind. I thought you meant something different.

What about audio mix-mashing stuff? DJ Green Lantern- Grey Album style... What are those programs called anyways, if I were to search for them?
