Hi, I'm on Windows XP and for the last couple of weeks, Avira has found the TR/Crypt.ZPACK.Gen trojan.

This is what it says each time:

    Begin scan in 'C:\WINDOWS\system32'
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ebpzvlv.sys
    [DETECTION] Is the TR/Crypt.ZPACK.Gen Trojan
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!

    Beginning disinfection:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ebpzvlv.sys
    [DETECTION] Is the TR/Crypt.ZPACK.Gen Trojan
[WARNING] An error has occurred and the file was not deleted. ErrorID: 26004
[WARNING] The source file could not be found.
[NOTE] Attempting to perform action using the ARK library.
[NOTE] The file was moved to '4ca1b6f0.qua'!

I've tried various things to get rid of it including Ccleaner and followed advice given in previous posts, but to no avail.
I've gone through the cleaning process as described in one of your posts and attached the generated log files. I'd be really grateful if someone could advise.
    Thanks!

I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 6
    • J2SE Development Kit 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • Java 1.5 Documentation
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 14
    • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.
    • Select File then Scan
    • On the Select Drives form select drive C by "ticking" the box for drive C and click OK
    • When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.

      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ebpzvlv.sys
    • After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!
After reboot, continue with the below.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    BIBTR

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ebpzvlv.sys
    c:\windows\Dsojutiyayiyohuy.bin
    c:\windows\Fjuhacibisovuniw.dat
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ebpzvlv.sys
    c:\documents and settings\NetworkService\Application Data\qcopjv.dat
    c:\docume~1\Daddy\LOCALS~1\Temp\BIBTR.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Daddy\desktop\~WRL0931.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Daddy\desktop\~WRL2445.tmp

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files in the below bold folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Tell me how things are running now please?

Thank you so much for your speedy reply and advice.
I've done all you suggested and Avira finally seems happy! I wish I'd asked sooner.
I've attached the logs as requested. Just a couple of things - settings.dat appeared on the desktop after running everything. Do you recognise it? Also, is it ok to have a shortcut link to a folder on desktop (it's linked to an extra harddrive) or should I access by explorer only?
    Thanks again

Update - I just got a detection warning from Avira:

Virus or unwanted program 'TR/Crypt.ZPACK.Gen [trojan]'
detected in file 'C:\System Volume Information\_restore{D5EB20B9-7003-4BCE-BE02-3304D3BA8B81}\RP1051\A0138228.sys.
    Action performed: Deny access

Maybe we're not out of the woods yet?

It is just a restore point that will be removed when you finish the below final instructions since your logs are clean.

settings.dat is just from running RootRepeal and the below should remove it too.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Just an update to say everything is working fine. I'll continue to follow the advice given on malware prevention.
Thank you for all your excellent help!
