transfering files to different drive

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by HumbleServant1611, Feb 10, 2009.

  1. So I got a new hard drive and my old HD is really low on vital memory it has 10% free space i need to transfer all my programs music etc... to my new hard drive. Right now it is set up as the slave drive. my problem is 1) I'm not to familiar with transfering files from the master drive to the slave 2) The master drive has the OS but i figure it will still work if I make shortcuts (Icons on desktop) for all my programs. I guess what i'm trying to say is that I want to access all my programs from my old hard drive but none of them actually being on the hard drive if some one could please help me that would be great

If this is to confusing ask as many questions as you can to understand what i'm trying to say

if it's just music files you can drop and drag them, your media player will have to point to the new location which again depending on which media player you are using should search for the new location and they files will play just as they did before.
there are also free apps on MG that can help you transfer files and programs to the new drive.

    Hi Mista,

You are referring to 'Virtual Memory'. Any drive needs about 25% free space for Virtual mem storage. . All Progs must be loaded into memory in order to run. Virtual Mem is hard drive space used for temperary storage for non essential data when Real Mem is low. HD is many times slower than real mem. You are correct that things don't go well with too little free space. What you need is a 'Clone' program. Google for Clone programs and pick one that describes your situation.

  6. what is clone program? isn't it like an image of your hard-drive?

  7. what features in this program can help would you articulate Because when i tried to transfer my programs "Drive to Drive" and its said it couldn't "Volume Locking"

    any suggestions?

I'm assuming you want to take a mirror image of the old drive and write it to the new larger drive, correct? The best way to do this is with a bootable utility that runs from a boot floppy or boot CD. Here's some free ones available here at Major Geeks:
    http://majorgeeks.com/Digital_Dolly_d5183.html
    http://majorgeeks.com/EaseUs_Disk_Copy_d4845.html *

    http://majorgeeks.com/Partition_Saving_d5753.html
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/HDClone_Free_Edition_d3809.html *
The ones marked with an asterisk * are ones I have personally used for HD imaging and I know they work, I have not tried the others, but I'm sure they're great. Other similar programs can be found in the following Major Geeks download sections:
    Drive Utilities: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads8.html
    Back Up: http://majorgeeks.com/downloads3.html
Good luck! I hope this helps!

(you can also find a free program for drive cloning/imaging/mirroring at the hard drive manufacturer's web site)

    Hi again Mista,

A clone program will take the data from the old drive an make a duplicate of it on the new drive.

  10. one more question before I try this. I do have other files stored on that drive will it add on or erase them and then copy the data on the hard drive?? also can i delete all the old copied files from the old hard dive and use it as a external HD?

    Thanks for all the feedback

    Shadow
