I installed a piece of software around a week ago. Since i rebooted i have been getting reports of various trojans, viruses. I would be very grateful for your assistance.

My mcafee software since has been behaving erratically. Attempting to send emails to recipients, none of whom i recognise from the log. Other symptoms were corrupt mcafee files, and i could not upgrade.
Tried mcafee's latest sdatnnnn.exe via a dos safe mode. identified and cleaned supposedly, pupor, bot i think, and trats virus, however they still appear to be present. nb. ran their scan process until the log was clean.
Also had the "you have 5 minutes to reboot" and can't stop it after that comes up.

ccleaner identified and removed startup issues, and the other stuff.
    defrag performed
combofix run and log attached nb. last night.
spybot search and destroy ran and cleaned stuff last night.
avg anti spyware left running overnight until it completed and turned off pc. nb. I have the control center version. the log recorded in the virus vault catchme 2008-01-18*.zip does not exist.

spybot auto started this morning and was supposedly clean.
    mgtools run and log attached.

Symtoms so far this morning are my mcafee software is identifying a buffer overflow in c:\windows\system32\services.exe. I am currently leaving that warning open while yr cleanup processes are running.
still getting a pupur warning via mcafee

Further to this, I received a letter today from my ISP that spam was being reported from my connection.
My mcafee software initially reported a number of failed attempts to unknown addresses, but I have no track of any that might have been successful.
I guess these are coming from my ISPs provided email address, which I do not use.

    Help guys! Thanks

    Let's start with this:
Download and save RenV.exe to Desktop (must be on the Desktop).
Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as Log.txt to your desktop.
    Code:
    C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSK\MskAgent .exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon .exe

    * Now using your mouse, drag Log.txt onto RenV.exe
    * When finished, RenV.exe will produce a new log. Attach the new Log.txt to your next reply.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_m.dll

    * Run ComboFix
    * Run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double clicking on it.
    * Attach the below new logs:
    o Log.txt
    o C:\ComboFix.txt
    o C:\MGlogs.zip

Hi Tim, and thanks for your help so far.

    1. Initially could not run renv.exe, access denied.
    2. Ran it in safe mode, nothing found, log1.txt NOT attached.
    3. rebooted into normal mode. ran it again, nothing found. log2.txt attached.
    4. HJT via C:\MGtools\analyse.exe successfully deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_m.dll
    5. C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_m.dll not found anywhere via explorer
    6. combofix.txt attached. NB. Huge number of pos*.tmp files deleted from My Documents folder
    7. mglogs.zip attached.

    regards
    Kerry

    Your logs look clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

It's not completely gone yet. I'm still getting a buffer overflow in c:\windows\system32\services.exe. Also, when I double click my Mcafee icon on the taskbar, or attempts to start Yahoo Messenger, it is starting up an installation of office 2003.
My Mcafee Security centre comes up with two windows, the Security Centre, and a "gathering protection status" window, which will not close.

Then let's see if we can narrow it down:

Bitscan link: agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

    Still about the same.

After the scan, I shut down to make a clean start. On shutdown, ctfmon.exe is being reported by windows as in error.

On reboot, everything appears ok, but when I click on the Mcafee icon, it reports the services.exe buffer overflow, then the pupor.dll problem.

Also Windows installer is popping up and attempting to re-install MS office 2003 all over the place. When I click a start up item mcafee, network connections etc, even when i try and run any program via Start -> All Programs -> pretty much anything. The required process ultimately runs after that.

    Thanks
    Kerry

You may need to uninstall and reinstall the McAfee program.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    Hi Tim

Find logs attached as requested. Avenger required a restrt, but the PC is not shutting down on it's own. When I rebooted, I noticed an access issue, but it is not in the log.

Latest is I do not now get the services.exe overflow, however am still getting the Windows installer for Office 2003 starting up for no apparent reason. I'm tempted to reinstall that.
Also got a McAfee MISP Shell problem and it closed.

You may want to run this for the Office problem:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html

These two user accounts should be disabled:
    Guest
    HelpAssistant

Do you know what these are:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kerry\Desktop\dat-5209.zip
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kerry\Desktop\dat-5211.zip

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now clean out both of these folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kerry\Local Settings\Temp\

And then use windows explorer to see if this is still present...if so delete it:
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\012819~1.EXE

Tell me what problems you still may have.

Used the linlk and uninstalled Office 2003, then reinstalled, and updated successfully.

Guest account was not enabled, HelpAssistant not on.

Those two dat files are from Mcafee last week.

Ran the HJT fix and Registry edit ok. Folders cleared out as requested, one required to be done in safe mode.
    File not existent in c:\windows\temp

No signs of any virus, Trats, Pupur, Mcafee appears to behaving normally.

The only thing being reported is svchost.exe application error at shutdown, and I am having to flick the switch. Thats sounds more of an XP issue than virus. Unless you know different.

Thanks againg for your help with this

McAfee could be causing the problem ...if you can, try uninstalling it and see if the problem persists.

It seems to have been clean for 2 days now. However I am loathe to remove my antivirus software. Are you implying mcafee doesn't work?

Not quite true I'm afraid. Windows Explorer is crashing "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" when I access my external hard disk. Do I need to run anything specific on that? I have scanned it with Mcafee and AVG

McAfee anti-virus and AVG Anti-spyware? Do you have the problem with explorer at any other times or only when trying to access the exterior drive?

Does the exterior drive work OK on another system?

I was suggesting that you uninstall McAfee and after a reboot, re-install it incase there is some corruption in the program files.

Have you run sfc /scannow ?

I installed AVG because your windows xp cleaning procedure advised me to. It doesn't actually say to only run one alone, although i figured that was best.

I uninstalled and reinstalled mcafee. What was interesting was that when the external drive was on, it downloaded upto 294 kbs then slowed to a crawl and stopped completely. I disconnected the drive, rebooted, and mcafee installed fine.
I put the drive on another machine and did another FDisk /f and a defrag. Seems to be ok there. NB. It's three years old, if that makes a difference. Also, it seems to be running very hot. Back on the pc with the problem and looks ok.

I hadn't been advised to run sfc /scannow, but did and no reported issues.

Everything seems ok now. it looks as though office 2003 and mcafee files had become corrupted. How could the latter be? Seems a waste of time me paying the licence fee for it.

This was part of the problem:
    Code:
    C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSK\MskAgent .exe

And did you run a chkdsk on the external drive?

Thanks. Can you tell me how that came about, and what the rest of the problem was? Virus/robot name etc, how you identified it? I'd be interested in becoming a guru. The last place I subscribed The Tech Guys, disappeared.

Yes, I FDISK'd the external drive on my other PC. As I said, all seems well, and thanks again for your help.

It is a new form of Vundo infection ...it's showing up a lot lately and I really have no idea where it is originating from. Keeping you system updated (Java/virus programs/etc.) is always a good idea ..along with a good firewall. But that is all covered in the How to Protect yourself from malware!
