Hi there, I was hoping you could help. My computer has been infected by a trojan horse, recognised by Sophos. However, Sophos says that it can't fix the problem. I have been through all the steps in the required Win XP tutorial to remove malware, on this site, to no avail. I have also gone through the steps suggested in another threat concerning this problem. However, it won't let me run Combofix, saying that is not a valid win32 application. Strangely, it did earlier let me run this programme so I've included the log in this thread.

Sophos keeps alerting me, saying the following file belongs to the virus/spyware Troj/Virtum-Gen.

    c:\windows\system32\rapscnhl.dll

I am a complete novice on these things so don't want to just delete it.

Also, my computer is running really quite slowly which I think is down to it being infected. I really hope someone can help with this! Another thing, I forgot to produce a report from AVG, so haven't included this but please tell me if this is essential as I can run the scan again and this time produce a report.

    Hi tomnewmark!
    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'll take a look at your logs and get back to you. Please be patient!
Were you able to run AVG Anti-Spyware and have it fix whatever it found?

Hi Abri, thanks very much and I will of course be patient, as I appreciate any help I can get for this. AVG brought up about 90 something items, but only one was a virus which was then deleted when I applied the action of all the items.

    Thanks, Tom

    Hi tomnewmark!

    1) Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the below:

    - Viewpoint Media Player
    - MyWay Search Assistant
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

    2) Reboot after uninstalling the above.

    3) Install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    4) If you do not use Windows Messenger (not to be confused with MSN Messenger!!) I would like you to run Disable/Remove Windows Messenger

    5) Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    O2 - BHO: {e1eb3ffb-c141-5b9b-26e4-e3fda35bf818} - {818fb53a-df3e-4e62-b9b5-141cbff3be1e} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rapscnhl.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E04CF589-D4B1-4089-B50B-6DB623F0394B} - C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\ryxykupebC:\WINDOWS\system32\pip5\mmildot83122.exe.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4oD] "C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KHost.exe" -all
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [H/PC Connection Agent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\Wcescomm.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Nntsudeg] C:\WINDOWS\system32\??curity\?ti2evxx.exe

Don't forget to close all browser windows before clicking on fix. After you click fix, just close hijackthis.

    6) Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    7) Please run ATF Cleaner This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    8) Please run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat and attach the fresh MGlogs.zip it generates along with the Avenger log.

Let me know how things are running now?

Hi Abri, thanks for your quicky reply. I've followed the steps and so far no warnings from Sophos or any blasted pop-ups so I think it may just of work! I did get an error message though from Avenger, which said:

Logfile of The Avenger version 1, by Swandog46
    Running from registry key:
    \Registry\Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\njbnwdys

Not sure what went wrong here, but maybe I don't need it? Anyway, thank you so so much for your help. It really is appreciated as wouldn't know at all what to do without it.

    Thanks, Tom

    Hi tomnewmark,

I need for you to complete step 8 of the instructions so I can check your mglogs.zip against the deletions and make sure that no new files showed up in between times. Please run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat and attach the fresh MGlogs.zip
It's possible Avenger didn't run, in which case it's important to see if the files were gotten rid of via hijackthis.

    Thanks.

    Hi tomnewmark!
I see that you've run SmitFraudFix and Killbox? Was that before you posted here?

I'm not sure why Avenger didn't run. Did you extract it from the Zip file before running it?

If you extracted it as per the instructions and it still didn't run, we will need to get rid of the remaining file a different way. If it won't run, please do the following:

Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract PocketKillbox to a folder where you will be able to find it again.

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
    • select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    • Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
    • Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files
it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and
    • choose copy):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kkgntedt.ini
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

Now please go to Windows Explorer and delete the following folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\daSgo01
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ineWc01
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pip5
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ub2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xc7

    Now run ATF-Cleaner!

Please post a fresh set of MGlogs.zip for me.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    abri

    Dear Abri,

Have done that now, and I've attached the new logs. I didn't get the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt.

Everything does seem to be performing a lot better now, no pop-ups and Sophos is keeping quiet. Haven't noticed any problems so far. Hope I'm all clean now. It's quite incredible all the steps needed to clean everything out, although I was contemplating formating everything and starting again so your help has been a real blessing!

    Thanks, Tom

    Hi tomnewmark!
There are a few files that I'm not sure about and would be appreciative if you could have them scanned at a website that scans individual files. Questions came up about them before, so the information would help us.

Please scan the following file(s) at either
jotti or VirusTotal and let me know the results.

    C:\WINDOWS\ntcheck3232bx1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\serauth1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssprs.dll

Either of the above websites has a small window with a browse button next to it which will enable you to locate these files in your computer. If they find nothing, you do not need to post the results, just tell me.

Hi Abri, am just without my laptop until Friday now but will do the scan on those files on the website you mentioned when I get back.

    Many thanks, Tom
