    A few days ago I was on a news website I believed to be safe, when I contracted a nasty case of Vista Security 2011. I should mention right away that I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Bootcamped MacBook. I immediately shut down the computer, switched to another one, and started googling for a fix. I wound up on bleeping computer, and followed the removal instructions located at www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-internet-security-2011. Everything went well up until the Malwarebytes phase... MB crashed several hours into its scanning process every time I tried to run it. Eventually I skipped it and tried SuperAntiSpyware, but it also was crashing every time. Last night I finally got an SAS scan to complete, and I realized that the crashing might be happening when the programs are trying to read my E drive (the Mac partition). After that I ran a MB scan and restricted it to the C drive, and everything seemed to go pretty smoothly.

    Anyway, I've gone through the MajorGeeks instructions in your READ ME FIRST thread and your Vista removal procedures, and think I have the infection cleared up, but I'm hoping someone will look at my logs for me. Especially since I still can't get all of the tools to run...

    So I've attached my SAS log and my MB log, but I skipped ComboFix because I ran it on this computer while trying to clear up an infection last year and it rendered the computer unusable... I wound up having to reformat. So I moved on to RootRepeal, but it crashes every time I try to run it, even when I restrict it to the C drive. For what it's worth, it seemed to be finding A LOT of stuff before it crashed... I don't know how normal that is. Then I moved on to MG Tools, and was able to complete a scan and have attached the log.

    Anyway, thanks for taking a look. I really appreciate the help.

    I suggest you uninstall Ad-aware as it is pretty useless these days. You are far better off with SAS and MBAM.

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please Disable Spybot's TeaTimer --> Should have been done as per the R&R instructions!

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else! Make sure you have cleaned out this folder:
    C:\Users\Julie\AppData\Local\Temp\

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the help, Tim, and sorry about TeaTimer... I hadn't checked because I'd been sure I already had it disabled.

    After running Ccleaner, I checked C:\Users\Julie\AppData\Local\Temp\ as instructed, and found a number of files hadn't been deleted. I played around with Ccleaner a little and found that you could specify extra folders to be cleaned out, so I added that folder and ran Ccleaner again. It still failed to erase C:\Users\Julie\AppData\Local\Temp\McAfeeLogs and C:\Users\Julie\AppData\Local\Temp\FXSAPIDebugLogFile.txt, so I tried to delete them manually, and couldn't. The message said that McAfee was using them both, even though I've done everything I know how to do to disable McAfee.

    Anyway, here are the log files. Thanks again for your help!

    Don't worry about the temp files that won't delete. They are fine. Let's try to remove this last file by using windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\ProgramData\17fm4hh3pcb7w11

    Tell me if you can do that. If it won't delete, try right clicking it, choose properties and make sure you have permissions over this file ( Check the security tab).

    You didn't tell me how things are running now.

    The computer seems to be running just fine, at this point. I'm no longer noticing any symptoms of infection.

    The file seems to have deleted just fine... I moved it to the recycle bin and emptied it with no fuss. I noticed while deleting it that its creation timestamp coincides exactly with the onset of the infection... thank you for catching it!

    Good to know.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
