Trouble installing Win98 on old Compaq Presario

Trying to install Win98SE on an old Compaq Presario 4528, P1/233MMX w/64mb RAM. Was going to give it to a friend of mine so his kids could use it to surf the web and not bug him to use his computer...but every time I go to install Win98SE, it gets to the final part of the install, detecting hardware and all that, and it pukes with a Windows Protection fault, says it can't find a VXD and that's it. I've removed the modem and the NIC, and reseated the memory stick. Any ideas??
