Everytime I go to save attachments from Outlook Express the program freezes. Ctr-alt-del I stop the program, reboot it and all's well again and I can save as if there was no problem.

    Any ideas anyone?

Strange .....go to event viewer and see if there are reported errors in application section that corresponds to the freeze ...give us the error code.

Does it do the same thing if you try to save a file from a website? What about Word (or Wordpad) when you go to file->save as?

TimW, no problem in event viewer that corresponds directly to the freeze but a huge record of the same problem constantly repeating, code 4609. Recently I started to disable some services following instructions from Major Geeks post lifted from Black Viper. As suggested I am working throuhg the list slowly to see if problems arise, a coincidence? BTW havenm't noticed any significant improvement in the performance of the computer either, possibly a touch slower.

Gecks, doesn't seem to happen with any other program. ftp or Firefox or word or exel with save or save as.

    thanks so far

Do you have an antivirus program running? If so, try disabling it, and try again. If this works, then....NO I don't suggest keeping the av turned off, just need to narrow this down. :)

Just to erk me the problem is now not appearing. Next time it does I'll disable NAV. But have had the NAV OE combo going for a long time and the problem has only arisen the last couple of days.

Were there any norton client updates lately? Not, normal av signatures, but actual program updates? These may or may not cause issues. Not always, but sometimes. :)

Trt re-enabling all those services. Click START, then RUN, then type in: msconfig (press enter).

Click START, then RUN, then type in: msconfig (press enter).

Click the radial button "Selective startup".
    Uncheck "startup items".

Press ok, then yes to reboot, try again.

If it still doesn't work, try the msconfig thing again, and select normal startup. Ok, Yes to reboot, then....

How many emails do you have in your inbox?
Try creating a new folder, then moving said email into that folder, and try saving that email.

Exit OE, if the above does not work.
Try going to IE, and emptying all Temp internet files.
    Re-start OE, and try again.

Sorry ....after doing as Theefool suggested ....would you go to internet tools / security / customize and check that downloads are enabled ....
Then check advanced for attachments ...see what is set for that.

Did what theefool suggested... at least got rid of the error in eventviewer. So far so good.

Downloads enabled... never had a problem downloading only saving attachments. Couldn't find "check advanced for attachments"

Enabled only the service which was related to the error. The error in the event log has disappeared. Did the msconfig thing.

I have a huge inbox. I have seperated out into various catagory-based folders to make it smaller

At the moment the machine seems to be behaving itself. Can now save large attachments without fuss.

    Thanks.
